light globes?

light globes?
Hey guys just wondering if i can get rid of the standard type globes in my hilux and swap them for a much brighter light is this possible or is there a standard or law on how bright your lights are?

depends on year of lux i guess, mine was 84 model and did not have sealed beams. actually, was a couple of years ago so might be wrong. anyway, wiring upgrade is best but will need to work around negative switching globes. can easily convert to normal positive switching with addition of 1 resistor & 1 diode - might cost $2.
The gains from changing from standard globes to phillips crystal vision or +50 is amazing, without the need to upgrade wiring and running high wattage globes.
Both my vehicles are running phillips +50 globes. 50% brighter, same wattage. I think they shit all over the 100/90 globes I was running.

I did a bit of reaserch into this a few months ago, the +50 ones are the way to go.
The blueish looking ones are designed to imitate the HID (high intensity discharge) headlights you see in new BMWs and so on (HID is -very- expensive). The blueish bulbs are a trade off, some have the same filiment as the +50 bulb but the blue tinge filters out some of the light, so you end up with a whiter light but there is some debate over weather it is worth the loss in light (due to the filter). As we are prohibited by law to keep the lowbeam wattage the same (i forget what it is) then I want to be getting the most light I can out of my bulbs, so I decided against the blue ones.
I have the clear +50 bulbs in our 2 cars, (Osram +50 - they are repackaged here as hella or narva I think) & they did make a difference. Upgrading the wiring loom is on the to do list too though

I went through this a while back with a '90 4Runner. Made a complete plug in loom replacement, with it's own relays. New system is activated by original plug. _HUGE_ difference. Actually have side light now and am able to drive highway without using the LFs.

This just means all the wires that run to the headlights. When you have a bunch of wires all together, it's called a loom for some reason.
I think you can buy plug-in sets for hiluxes and some other vehicles, but a lot of people make their own.
Generally the best way is to get some good relays and decent cable, then use the existing loom to trip the relays.

well, this is how to modify a 80 series. for a hilux (or similar) simply ignore anything related to "inner high beam". these two (as well as many others) are harder to modify as you are also converting from negative switched to positive switched globes.
instant light upgrade
positive switch upgrade is simply connect sense wires to original headlight connector, low beam wire thru to one side of coil of relay, other side to gnd. high beam thru to one side of a coil another relay, other side to gnd. then power thru fuse to contacts of each relay, output of these contacts go to globes. use same connectors to make it real plug 'n play, and fat wire
