Best oil for a 2H

Post by sambo »

What do people think is the best oil to use in a 2H. Up until now i have been using Castrol RX Super. But i was wondering if another oil would be better.

My bro serviced a huge fleet of 'cruisers (mainly HJ60s) and they use RX super. No oil related problems at all.

I used it once and it's the only time my 2H has used oil in between 5000 km oil changes....

Really, I also do 5000km oil changes and never had any problem. What mileage have you got on your rig?

I use to run Rx in mine and it was great. It is recommended for older Japaneese Diesels especially the 2h that clogs up with soot etc

Ive been running Fuchs Titan Ultralube 15-40.

Never had any problems and it comes in a handy 10L bottle with tap.

penrite hpr is 20/60 i think, which is way to thick for a 2H

I use Shell Rimula X. Its been great, had no problems with it.

Id suggest stick with what youve been using. The castrols tend to be low on the detergent side of things (GTX is, dunno about RX) but should still be a good oil.

The MIAME journal had an article once which touched on the differences between the brands of oil. Apparently castrol manufacture a thick oil and then thin it out to all the different specifications, where as other manufacturers use a different process where they manufacture a thinner oil and thicken it. The article gave the impression that the castrol method was dodgy, but still rated castrol as a good oil. I do not pretend to understand the process of making multigrade oil so dont take my translations as accurate :). I do however know mechanics that will not use castrol because of thier "inferior?" manufacturing process. (diesel mechanics)

My 2H has done 395,000 and it uses about 1/2 a litre between services using Shell Rimula X, but im more than happy with that given its age.

Something to remember is that when you ring Toyota they will generally tell you what oil they use in thier workshop, which is probably a good quality oil, but is also a oil they use in a very wide range of diesel engines, not just the 2H's which were build until 1990, but also the new 1HZ's etc.

If they do recomend an oil specifically for the 2H, ie not the oil they use in all thier diesels, then i would probably take thier advice, after all, they're the guys who work on them every day!

the workshop manual for the 2H recomends an oil with an API rating of CC or CD or better and also gives a wide range of viscosity ratings depending on the temperature you expect to operate the engine in.

15W40 is good for -12degrees C to over 38degrees C.

If you only go as low as 10degrees celcius it tends to indicate a 20w-40 oil would be more suitable. (have never seen an oil with this rating tho)

If you live in iceland, you should be using 5W-30 :) (0degrees C and lower)

The highest weight oil it recomends is a 20W50 for temperatures over 27degrees C. So 20w60 is too thick!

So i guess a 15W40 oil with a CC or CD rating is what was recomended for the engine back in 1987. Im pretty sure most oils are CH rating now which is ofcourse far superior to the CC or CD.

Penrite HPR is what I use in my 2H. I used to use 15/40 but up here with the temps in summer its way too thin & after a long run the oil light would come on at idle. I plastigauged all the mains and bigends & they were well within tolerance (but I replaced them all anyway). I started using Penrite 20/60 & no more problems. I did a 1600km run a month ago down to Longreach & back with only a 10 minute stop there for fuel & I might have burnt about a half litre or less of oil so I don't think oil use has increased since I've started using Penrite.
I'd prefer to use a 20/50 oil as I don't think the 60 viscosity is necessary but as far as I know 20/50 for diesels isn't made.

penrite HPR is far too thick. I used it once in my 2H as a suggestion for a guy at a spare parts place, I fitted a oil pressure guage to it and i was getting 125psi at 2300RPM !!!!!!!!!!!!!! (cold), about 100psi at 2500rpm at temp.

suffice to say the oil only stayed in for 200km's, and ive still got half a fdrum in the garage lol.

I am using mostly castrol oils and still burn a lot of oil. Not noticeable in the rearview mirror but a big drop between services. Maybe the turbo is burning the oil as it does come out a little thick when changed cold.

Has anyone use the Valvoline J-Tech 15w-40 in their 2H?

http://www.valvoline.com.au/products_up ... egory=FF01

I have had my turbo 2H 60 since februaury and have been using Total Rubia TIR6600 (we get it at work) which our supplier said would be suitable, but in 3000km i have used about 1.5 litres, which i think for 280k is shit house. I have bought a 20L drum of the Valvoline which i'm going to try, i have to drive out to Alice Springs from Canberra in a few weeks so i guess i will find out if it burns it or not! I noticed that the J Tech is a high ash oil but oils like RX Super are low ash, what's better suited to a 2H? I'd be happy if it used say half a litre between 5000km intervals but at the rate its going it will use about 2.5 litres!
