Exhaust noise
Exhaust noise
I have searched and there is a lot of info about 4-2-1, tri-Y, etc
The recommended exhaust size appears to be 2" and a V6 commodore cat is a cheap replacement for the sierra and a straight thru type muffler seems the go.
I have a 90 softtop sierra with a 2" hot dog on a standard exhaust (put on by previous owner) that drones like all hell (headache material and yes I have considered wearing earplugs), particularily at low revs (2-2500)?
The questions are:
1. Do other people have this problem with the straight thru type mufflers or are there other types that do not make as much noise.
2. If you just put a 2" system on without extractors will it free a couple of horses?
The car is basically stock with 215/75 bfg muds, OME shocks and a snorkel

You have extractors on it now ?
I found that a 2 inch system (ended up catless for various reasons) with a decent muffler mounted high worked well, should not be all that expensive to get a Zorst made up to suit .. especially if you offer cash.. Let em know what your after, and they will sort it out ..

i've got a 2" mandrel system, high-flow cat and muffler. a local guy in newy bends his own stuff so it wasn't much more expensive than normal exhaust. couldn't tell ya brand, but it's a nice flat muffler, tucked up nice and high for wheelin. has a nice note, but isn't too loud in the cab.. i rate it

Yep, as said, a decent muffler will sort it. A header with a hot dog type glass pack up front and a turbo muffler at the back works good for me. The glasspack takes the bark out of it, and the Turbo takes the headache out of whats left.
It makes better power than with just a glasspack coby at the rear end.
And the header will make better power than the std. manifold does.
In fact a stock 1300 doesnt even need the 2 inch pipe, a 1 & 7/8 ths works nice.

It's better to have LIVED for a day than to have EXISTED for a hundred years.
On the weekend I replaced the exhaust. I now have a 2" from the cat back with glass packed a sports muffler and resonators tucked up nice and high.
Headache now gone but I can hear all the other noises and even the radio!
Performance wise I was on the freeway yesterday with 2 people, a full tank of juice and a couple of sets of golf clubs and it seemed to hold 100-110 without being flat to the boards. Offroad will probably provide a better indication but so far I am happy.
