crossing over to the darkside....
Hi Guys..
Just wanted to say Hi to all the Nissan guys.. having only been in the Toy room before. I have just got the family a 88 GU Patrol on petrol/gas.
Thought i would stick my head in and say G'day before all my questions start...lol
I still have the FJ40 so im not totally converted.. yet... but i am looking forward to the gas up and down the hills...
Looking forward to some good advice in the future...

hahaha.. good to see some daft buggers on here too..
Looking forward to having a play off road. i must admit to being quite impressed with other club members Patrols.
Looking forward to modding.. tho the wife did frown at me when i told a mate that...lol
I think a lift is the go first. this is a stock truck.. 2" enough?.. its got 31's but i might get some 33's before too long.

2" and 33s is a pretty capable rig, that would be my suggestion
If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!
I also recently crossed over from toyata's
All I have to say is that Toyotas and Nissans both have their advanatages and disadvantages and I have enjoyed driving both.
I went with 4 inch lift and 33s and im quite impressed about how the gq goes

These are rare as
Welcom though mate. Stick to 3-4" lift, 35" rubber and F7R air lockers then once you get sick of braking CV's change to a GU front diff.
Cheers

crossign over...
ok, first blunder... its a GQ not a GU... a Y60??
Have just had all new suspension fitted.. EFS.. 2 inch lift which actually raised mine by 4 inches as it was F*@ked... soo much better.. and also had some extractors fitted and 2.5 inch system. all huge improvements.
Looks like a fwd now...lol.
I agree that toy drivers do bite quicker than nissans...lol.. having been on both ends now.
Thinking of 33 muddies... and maybe a air locker.. front or rear guys?
oh, a winch too. man ARB want an arm and a leg for their set up... $3500 all up. Dont like the bars much.. might make my own. Im sure there are some good designs out there?

Look around for a second hand bar, 3WJ in sydney are always advertising in the 4x4 mags like Just 4x4's. Toyota do a fairly cheap genuine winch which would do if you were not planning to comp a truck. I get by with just the hand winch as i have never been stuck yet. I am a bit lazy when I am by myself as I think do I really need to go there & then spend an hour winching out? Id rather be driving. I only really carry it for if something unusual happens, its a diffent story when i am out with my mates - 2wd all the way until I get stuck, then 4wd & if that doesnt work then out with the snatchum strap , its a bit of a competition with us.

crossing..
lol, yes, i totally get that.
I have a hand winch too, but i cant see myself ever pulling this thing out of the mud with it. Not that i have used it yet on the 40 either.
Its more for when i go traveling with the family by ourselves.. just want to be as self sufficient as we can.
I have seen some second hand winches for sale in the local trading post.. half price or less some of them. might snap one of them up.
Thanks for the heads up on the Bar work. will have a look see.

With the hand winch you have to go the softly sofly technique, bit of tension, drive, tension, drive, tension with a bit of digging thrown in. Snatch blocks work wonrers but you need extension straps.
My dad has this huge hand winch which has a 1.5 foot diameter barrel & a 6 foot bar, heavy as shit but is will scull drag a D9 with the correct anchor

Fit a front air locker first. That way the factory LSD (if it is fitted with one) will take reasonable care of the rear and you can always fit a rear air locker later.
Cheers
