Im just considering my options at this stage
I know im going to cop it left right and centre i can take it bring it on
Now we are past that has anyone done this?
Would it be a major job or just custom made arms shock mounts etc
also what ratio dose GU run in there diffs standard?

If you can not get there in a 4wd its not worth looking at

You can cope with that?

Yep that isnt a prob the 80 isnt off set all that much i run 80 diffs with standard style coil suspention in my swb40 atm and tail shaft runs on an angle as the 40 diffs run a lot more off centre and it works fine with no issues at all. Tail shaft would run on an angle but in opp direction and would be longer so i carnt see a problem with it.

Guts wrote:Why not just leave the 80 rear as its full float and strong once you upgrade the axle bolts like you have done to the 40. Or just go a 100 series rear since you don`t have any diffs ATM anyway.
Mmmm this is what this is all about considering my options 100 series diffs are 5 stud i think???
what ratios are standard GU diffs???

can get GU rations 4.11(td42ute) 4.6(2.8td)
Fester has put GQ diffs in his 80 ... speak to him
all four X four spares
can get u a number if u want

100 diff will bolt straight in where an 80 was....bigger brakes/handbrake/ studs/bearings etc....IF the front diff is what your needing to improve on....and the gq comes in 4.1 aswell.....navara lsd fits in the ctr....
GU has 4.111 so should be close enough.
And the other is 4.375 is that close enough to the to the toy ratio. There is also a 4.625, from the 2.8 and I think some 3lt's.

I put a 100 rear end in my 80ute with 4.3 ratio and a 4.375 in the front and it far from worked there, was too much difference in the ratio's. When driving fast on gravel roads in 4wd the growling from the front was terrible as you could hear the crown wheel and pinion hammering into each other. I had to fit a 4.375 rear and the problem was fixed. The wind up in the drive was real bad that when too much tension built up a front wheel would spin with a load bang to release the tension.
I modified the rear hubs to 6 stud from ( 100 series 5 ) as i wanted to keep the bigger 32 spline 100 axles and the axle studs are on a bigger PCD as well.

If he dosnt mind that would be good maybe an email address??? be better
the 80 is 4.11 i think and the 40 is 4.1 or the other way round so either way i could get ratios to match
but i think i would want to swap both or none and if i was to it would be go whole hog GU not GQ
the other option is to maybe upgrade the front centre some how as that is the weak link

what is the track width of a GU compared to an 80???
thanks all Darren

To strengthen an 80 diff ctr, you make up a bearing spacer that is solid instead of the crush slieve in the pinion.....you drill and tap out all the studs in the housing (holding the pumpkin in) to the next size...i think from 10 to 12mm....you put a air locker or a centre that is LSD, and get rid of the hemisphere with two large holes in it.
The 80 is 4.1, so is the gq, heard of people putting gq/u fronts in there for strength......if you want to compete, id do that.

Thanks all for input so far
I still really dont know for sure what I'm doing with diffs yet. I can buy a pair of 80 diffs for approx $1000 and GU's will cost I'm guessing $3500 that is enough for a pair of lockers. So now what if i make the load over the front diff a lot lighter that will help the overall package i feel.
So my questions now are???
What is the fly wheel kilowatt's output of a standard 4.5lt 80 engine and the weight of it???
Now if i look at alloy engines only what is the weight and flywheel output of say a
Supercharged alloy holden V6
Gen 3
LS3
I was told a 1UZFE is approx 190klw
and 1UZ approx 300klw with they thought the weight to be around 180kg????

yes it dose thank you

dose a turbo 400 bolt up to a gen 3 or the alloy v6
as i belive the turbo 700 output shaft is smaller and some have trouble with breaking them??
thanks Darren

1UZFE and 1UZ are the same,
Approx wieght is 180kgs.
Standard power varies from 180kw to 210kw. older the motor the lesser kw the newer the motor the more kw.
With extracters and exhaust, after market comp and some good tuning you`d be looking at around 300kw.
Cost of half cuts vary from $1800 to about $2800, depending on year of make, k`s etc etc etc.
i wouldn't touch a v6 unless you want to fit it to a suzuki or somwhere space is a problem. if you need a six a falcon ba can be had for $1600 for the stock 182kw or around $5000 for the turbo 240kw 450nm variant. a straight 6 would produce smooth torque figures that would put a v to shame with crank seperation of 120 degrees. if i wasn't obsessed with chevs the falcon turbo would be in my bay now. and you get factory realibilty which is not often the case with aftermarket tb42 etc turbo applications.

Darren Mcrae's was 220kw out of his Blue 80....
std 4.5 has 165 kw in a 100 or 158 in an 80....Dazza's turbo would have had more than that at the flywheel....r u saying it was at the wheels or flywheel???
Ive read about 4.5 turbos with 290 at the wheels....on performance forumns there was a show on last week where they had 300 at the wheels in 80's...heard about it...didnt see it...
Andrew
The new holden alloytec V6 is around 160kg and dont come out as a turbo yet, they do make a turbo version but is only for front wheel drive Saabs and Alfas. The engines are as strong as s**t though, they have 6 bolt mains, forged crank and forged rods, so you would easily make 250+ kw by supercharging it without pulling the engine to bits.
GQ 4.2 Turbo Diesel, 4" spring, 2" body, 35" ET2's...etc

tryin to ask him on Yahoo at moment.
I've been looing for info on s/c v6 for a while and have come to the conclusion that they are pretty rare and expensive if you find one cos maybe all the commodore guys pick them up?
The supercharged 3.8 v6 sold in oz were about 170- 180kW, torque was 380Nm(?)- it's on the Marks Adaptors site. Weight- similar to n/a v6? Think they were sold with the 4l60e box (electronic version of t700) so if you adapted to non electronic box I guess you would need a new engine management system (same deal as Lexus).
In US they have similar motor from GM the SC3800- all similar specs I would guess but different plenum (guy in WA put one in commodore and had to adapt the intake).
Ford also made a s/c 3.8 v6 for mustang- a fella on the coast has one for $2000 (he's imported a few). I was thinking about it but don't know how good spares would be. He says all the GM and Ford stuff can be bolted up to most of the US boxes- so that would include the T400. (He recommended an early Jeep 4 speed for my truck with over 6:1 first gear came with Dana 18).
I'm still interested in the GM v6 if you find out any more about them.
