Help with fitting aThor mainfold lathe and skill needed

Post by Philip A »

I am currently working to fit a "Thor" mainfold to my 3.9.
Having the lower manifold machined at present to fit a thermostat and the temp sensors.
I can fit the 3.9 fuel rail if I can make a spacer to move the fuel pressure regulator back about 1CM. ( the 4.0 fuel rail is completely different with no fuel pressure reg. I reckon its easier to use the 3.9 one and 3.9 injectors. Of course as usual there is no record of the flow of the new injectors which are shorter "155 787" Bosch Green.

Does anyone on the forum have a hobby lathe and the skills to make an adaptor from brass . I have the dimensions on a drawing I can fax .
Basically its a copy of the nose of the regulator on one end, and the end of the fuel rail on the other, so it slots between. Its about 2CM long and has a groove for the o ring . It needs a good finish on the inside of end that the regulator slots into as it is sealed by an o ring..
Of course I will pay a good price!!
Please email me philip.armbruster@agric.nsw.gov.au
I will share my experience with anyone interested.

just some thoughts -

would it be easier to modify the 4.0 rail to fit an aftermarket adjustable
fuel reg? weld on a screw in bung hole, get the new unknown injectors flow tested.

Your VE will change due to the new manifold (otherwise why bother)
so set fuel pressure to compensate assuming new and old injector flow rates are linear.

at lest you will end up with newer injectors which must have a better spray pattern. plus fuel rail will be a straight bolt on job.

Yeah that is an option, but the new rail is VERY different.
It has one inlet only at the back as motronic cars have the regulation in the fuel pump. The two rails are not joined at the front.
So I would have to
Have a crossover pipe welded across the front, Have an inlet hose made up to meet my current hose, as the high pressure hose on my car is integral with the steel pipe.
Have a high pressure pipe made up on the other side to go to an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator.
Weld a bung on the new rail to take the fuel temp sensor.
The new rails are square tube about 2CM, with recessed ends, so the ends would have to be drilled out, and new flush ends welded on, all about 1CM from the existing injector boss.
On balance I thought it much easier and less expensive to use the old rail and injectors.

I am going to see ENZED this saturday to see whether they can crimp fit a high presure hose on the pipes, they have a 90degree turn down only about 2.5CM from the end of the rail.

In comparison, I have only to separate the rear of the rail on my 92 Range Rover rail, bend the rear pipe back about 1CM, and fit the adaptor to bring the regulator back to clear the back of the lower manifold. I may also have to cut a boss off the upper manifold.
OR I can use the Disco 3.9 rail I have borrowed, which is different to the Rangie one.( the fuel pressure regulator ison the other side LH, but its fuel tewmp boss is half way along the LH rail rather than at the RH front on teh Rangie) But on it I have to fit the spacer, and then cut off the boss for the fuel temp sensor, and reweld it in the Range Rover pposition.
