Feedback on Lux buggy
I'm about to embark on my Lux based buggy just need some feedback on the following from those with Hilux expirence.
I'm planning at this stage for a full tube chassis, 22R (LPG) 4 or 5 speed manual, dual cases into 4.8 diffs on 35" claws.
I have the diffs, wheels and tyres so far and am trying to get all of the parts together and rebuilt before i start the car.
1. has anyone had any problems with Lux dual transfer setups?
2. Is there any distinct advantage in running the 4 speed or the 5 speed on a vehicle that will probably never get out of low range?

To help a bit with the dual T/case Q the only prob of heard of is oil delivery between the two cases and the out put shafts are the weak but still strong can up grade.

1 You wont have any problems with the duals in a vehicle with those specs
2 Ok people will try to tell you the 4 speed case is weaker this is true for the petrol 4 speed, if you use the diesel (pretty sure the code is L42) the gears in side is comparable to the 5 speed (G52). The major adavantage will be your driveline will be 150mm shorter than a 5 speed driveline

If you stick with that exact setup, you shouldn't have any troubles. Obviously rear outputs are an issue. I have twisted one with std 22r motor, std gearing and 37" boggers. I have also broken them since with more hp and gearing. If you upgrade the motor at some stage, there will be a risk of breaking the input into the second case. However, the 22R will not have enough grunt to do this in my opinion. It is for this reason that I went single case with gears.
And after having a hilux with a 22R, I'd recommend a more powerful motor.

For the moment i'm intending on running the 22R as the rock crawling scene down here is an unknown. I don't want to go and tip any more money into the buggy than i need to for the moment.
If it all goes ahead i'll swap the donk for something else down the track or sell the whole rig and build another.
If it ends up down here with 1 round of WEROCK and that's it i can't see much point of having too many dollars tied up.
The 22R is a simple and cost effective way of doing things unless anyone has a better idea that fits within the perameters.
What's the ratio difference in the gearbox between the 4 and 5 speed? The 4 speed length is noted, can be an advantage but in a buggy the possibilities are endless.

I think to get started you really need to build what you can afford!
So if thats the set-up you can afford than go for it!

Now the biggest issue with running twin cases in a Comp Buggy is simply the length of the drive train. You would be better of putting in a set of reduction gears! This will at least keep it as short as possible!
Yes twin cases are fine in a rig with a 110 inch wheelbase but if you are looking at building a good buggy you should be aiming somewhere between 98 - 106 inches. So the single case will work better in that situation.
I am not sure on your budget but you say that you can only compete in one werock in melbourne. Why not try and get to the fourth one which should be in sydney.

for me it's all time, i run my own business so its hard to get away any distance.
The dual case length was taken into consideration. The only reason that i am swaying towards it is my current vehicle (sierra with crawl 106:1) is almost too low in low (can just go up gears) but it's high range sucks.
I was thinking that dual cases would be a bit more flexible/versatile. But now i'm not sure.

Ive been thinking way down the track of building a lux based buggy, and was thinking about using the 22R, but one thing i have come to notice out wheeling is that carby motors dont like angles and stalling in badly angled spots can be a prob if you cant get it started again. Is this a common issue with carby'd engines or can a carby be set up for such situations? What about the 2LT as an alternative engine? Would it have enough grunt for the job? supercharged perhaps?

The severe angles are why i'm looking at running it on straight gas. I may loose a little power but it will run as well if not better than EFI on wacky angles

you just have to watch a few vids of BeeBee's and you will be swayed, a toy 3rz and std t/case with gears has plenty of mumbo and wheelspeed and will also crawl between obstacles. Dave usually drives everthing in 2nd and it does it easy in a full weight vehicle, so in a light buggy it would be awesome! and it runs on its side no probs
