GQ LWB 2" Body Lift!
GQ LWB 2" Body Lift!
Hey Guys!
I have a 94' GQ LWB, with a 2" OME susp lift, and am looking for a 2" Body lift, so that I can fit 37" in the place of the 35" I'm already running!
Does anyone know where I can lay my hands on good quality body lifts, and if I need to change my diffs or ring & pinion to run the 37"s.
I already lost a bit of power off my 3rd and 4th gear after going from 31" to 35".

idealy you should run 4.88:1 ratio with 37 inch tyres to bring it back to normal gearing, for 35 inch tyres you should be running 4.625:1 ratio's.
You could probably get away with the 4.6 diffs from a 2.8 td patrol which might be easier to find and appear to be stronger than the aftermarket 4.88's.
shane
BTW if you look at the aluminium plate on the firewall where it says "transaxle" the last two numbers indicate the diff ratio.
EG: 39 = 3.900:1 and 41 = 4.111:1 and 43 = 4.375:1 and 46 = 4.625:1

sorry, a bit off-topic, but have you seen anyone break any of these yet?? I was told by people to avoid the 4.88's as they "always break", but none of these people had seen one let go, or knew anyone who had busted a set??
no haven't seen one break but one got very noisy due to wearing in less than 20k
But i only know of three people running them and two of those have 2.8 td GU and the other a 4.2 GQ
the others havn't got that many k's up yet.
apparently it was noisy due to the hard casing wearing or something.
i know heaps of people with the 4.625 nissan dif and the only ones who have broken have been from breaking trailing arms which allowed the diff to move and sheered of the pinion and bent shocks etc
i have the 4.6 nissan diffs but i'm fairly gentle on them

But guys, if I go for the 4.88s, won't I suffer during long trips, and won't I loose speed on high gear when running in 2WD, since I drive my truck everyday and most of my trips are on the highways!

nor, running 4.88 diffs and 37" tyres will be the same as running 4.111 diffs and 31 inch tyres so it will be like driving a stock standard one .
that is unless you have a 2.8turbo diesel or a 3.0 litre petrol which have 4.625 and 4.375 diffs respectivly.

Thanx Big Red!
I'll C If I can get my hands on a 4.88!
If not, I will settle for a 4.6

alll gooooood just done the 50mm body lift on my patrol with the nylon blocks ... turned them up on the metal lathe here ... looks sweet
completed in about 3 hours.... note those with safari intercoolers need to mount them back to the orgininal height
small question ... how the hell do you fit 35" tyres under a gq with a 2" lift ... u must have alot cut out of ur guards ...

Well Terrafirma,
I did some cutting, all around the tire, and they fit perfectly.
They sometimes slightly brush when I am at full extension on one side.
As for more comfort, I am looking at a 2" body lift.
Do you have any plans, or do you know where I can find some or even a ready made full kit.
Cheers!

I made my own kit! theres some pics floating around some where
after searching high and low around town I found a bearing shop that had
self lubricating nylon rod what ever u call it ... 72mm diameter
used a metal lathe to part it into 50mm blocks and to drill the 13mm hole in the center ... then went to bolt master to get 150mm high tensile bolts washers and spring washers and nuts to suit
undo all ur body bolts, lift to suit height insert blocks and bolts
and tighten nice and tight ... had to trim around the t/case lever
and if u have a safari turbo and intercooler .. u have to remount the intercooler to its original height (just bootyfabed some mounts)
if ya want some more pics pm me ya email I have a few
theres a post some where on here ... follow the steps and all will be fine
very easy .. took me bout 3 hours

while your at it change the body mount rubbers, it stops the clunks and bangs in the floor of a GQ.
just goto somewhere and buy a length of 75mm alloy rod, enough to cut into 12 equal lengths (LWB) for your body lift, and your 3/4 the way there.
buy the longer bolts mentioned in Bazzles How to, and then cut a V shape around the Shift lever and 4wd shift lever and your 4/4 the way there.
