Suspension once again

Post by mistaboz »

Im a newbie as you can see. but before everyone tells me to go and do a search, ive read heaps of posts about this.

Questions are -
Advantage of body lift?
Advantage of spring lift?
Advantage of both?

Lets say i wanted to run a 30 - 31" tyre... Wouldnt i be better off to just lift the body, keeping the COG low?
If i was to run the same setup but instead of body lift do a spring lift then my COG would increase? Not an advantage that i can see?
After all its the tyre size thats going to give you under chassis clearance. Even if you do the spring lift your not going to get your diff housing any higher up. So if travelling along a rutted track and you bottom out chances are youll be hung up on the diff housing (front or back) and not anything higher than it.

Sorry bout the long post. What does everyone think?
Cheers

if you do a spring lift and you add slightly longer shackles you then have more axle articulation which in its self is an advantage

lift

the best advise is look at what you end up wanting to do , as in new bigger motor, then body lift, has the advantage. as it is helpful when fitting a 1.6 efi, but it also helps with cog. but the bigger springs, will flex more if they are soft, and the tyres stay in contact more with ground.

ask around and go for a drive in cars with the mods you thinking about.

p.s. legal wise you get away with the springs, where as you won't with a body lift in qld

with a spring lift you also get better rampover, departure and approach angles.

Upto 50mm body lift (2inch) is legal in qld if it has been done properly ie has a certificate. Body lift will provide the clearence for the tyres- (Advantage), Springlift will also give you clearence for the tyres plus clearence between the bumpstops which in return gives you more articulation or wheel travel-(advantage), this increase in wheel travel will keep the tyres contacting the ground meaning the rig will be more stable as it will be on all 4 wheels. Im running round 29 1/2 inch and have a 2inch spring lift, tyres just touch the body. Just. I have thought about the cog and probabily might only lift mine maybe an extra inch as in body lift.
Depends on what you plan to do with ur machine,

your engineer probably don't like 4by's  2" body lift is perfectly legal in qld BUT to be approved must go over the department of transports own pits.

This is where they will defect you for fly sh!t on the bonnet if they don't like you/ your car/ their wives/ the weather etc etc

a body lift helps to run a bigger tyre as it increases room regardless of suspension position. With spring lift only, you would need a 2" spacer on the bumpstop to have the same clearance for tyre when flexed up.

a body lift also doesn't raise centre of gravity as much as the same height of spring lift.

IMHO the two work together. with a 2" suspension lift and a 2" body lift, with some careful rim offset and a little bit of sork flattening seams etc, you will run a 31 10.5 no worries with a nice sensible looking car.

Cant comment of whether or not that is too much tyre for the QLD constabulary though :?

sounds like you need to go on a suzuki club trip and check out what others have done and see how well it works.
