gday boys managed to destroy the internals of my 2002 gu's rear diff the other week. destroyed my locker crown wheel and pinion and even mangled the diff housing. mechanic tells me could be due to a couple of reasons but will know for sure soon.
will keep you posted on the outcome and will try and get some pics of the mangled bits up here

i dont really know much of the workings of the lockers, but that does not sound good. does the whole diff need to be replaced?? including housing?

it had a arb locker in it, and supposedly 4.88 ratios
will find out for sure tomorrow but on some lockers you need to put washers on depending on the length of the bolts. the guys said there was no washers in the mess that came outta the diff
will try and get some photos of the damage and the real reason for the stuff up tomorrow arvo.

i did this once, well put the locker on and then straight away dump the clutch and it went bang, but i havent noticed any different when driving. might pull the centre out one day for a look see to see if i have damage of some kind, i might have just been lucky nothing went bang

hahaha ... i've seen lockers switched on mid burnout with 36" pedes
surpirsingly nothing went bang .. lockers are strong if installed right

the final story
was running 4.875 in front and 4.625 in rear. This was the cause of my problem. both diff ratios were professionaly installed but i still ended up with different ratios each end. this was the cause of my massive repair bill.
so make sure your mechanic puts the same ratio in front and back
anyone want a slightyly second hand locker. may be slightly bent and mangled hahaha.

Am I missing something, but it sounds like you are being charged to fix their fuck up? How does that work?

Their fuck up not yours or did you hand them the gear and say fit this shit to my car?
If they are the "Professionals" you say they are, then they should wear the complete bill for the lot. I know some pros that suck lots

the so called professional supplied all parts and labour.
i will be ringin him on monday to try and get the money out of him.
if he doesnt wanna compensate me then ill have to name him here

the owners and moderated of OL dont want any names named on here especially when it comes to badmouthing them, due to all the laww suits/litagation, so your better off keeping the name quiet

This all sounds kind of odd. Are you saying you were just driving along the highway and your rear diff exploded? Was the air locker actually in operation on the highway? Were you in four-wheel-drive?
I'm just thinking that a mechanic who would fit different ratios to front and rear would probably also make some other errors.
But if (a) you were in 4WD on the highway with the locker on and (b) your mechanic fitted mismatched diff ratios then I guess it's less clear-cut who actually caused the problems. Locker and 4WD should be okay until you turn a corner even on the bitumen... unless the ratios are mismatched.
