What would a gas conversion cost for one of these beasts?
And what would be the maximum capacity I could have for petrol if it was running gas. I presume there is only room for one gas tank and one petrol tank?
Anybody running an 80 on gas? What is it like to drive? Is there a massive loss in power?

Mate of mine has the early model 80 (3f motor) on gas.
They remove the rear tank (sub tank) and spare wheel and put the tank in there. So you still have main tank for fuel (90ltr) and the gas tank (approx 90ltr).
Seeing as you are talking about the 4.5ltr beast of a motor, i have no idea of how it would go on lpg but should be quite good, coz of the injection setup versus carby on the 3f (old technology not so finely tuned).
oh and dont forget the cost of a spare wheel holder, either on the back or inside the car.

Put LPG on my 4.5, 80 last year, lost a little power on gas, but for general driving not noticable, considering the power the 4.5 has anyway.
Cost all up was about $3k including the wheel carrier on the back.
Returns about 11cents, or less per kilometre (let me see a diesel cruiser return those figures) at 52c/litre.
The tank is 100 usable litres, althought it has taken up to 112 litres one day (that's what the bowser said anyway???). For the 100 litres you will get between 450 - 500 kilometres around tow or on highway. Little less off road or beach work. About 370km with my fully laden off road camper on the hwy, flogging it.
To make it worth while you need to buy gas at least 30c/litre less than ULP, which is not hard at this point in time. The most I have paid recently was 80c/litre at Charleville on a recent trip, but ULP was still 114c/litre. It wasn't a big saving for that tank, but you still have your long range ability by using both tanks. You get to keep your main tank of 90 litres.
Many say that you can't get LPG in the more remote area's, that may be true, but if you plan your trip there are heaps of LPG outlets. My parents regularly travel to remote area's of Oz with their LPG 4by without to much trouble. I usually carry extra fuel on my camper for that 'just in case' time. It's a bit hard to carry 'jerry cans' of LPG!
So basically I say it is the best thing I've done. It takes about 30,000 km to pay back the outlay, but it's cheap motoring with no real loss of performance.
I am looking at up grading to a 100 and will more than likely by a V8 (yes, Im a petrol head at heart) and put it on gas. Need to research the Government's policy on taxing the LPG. It was to be increased by 2007, but I now hear it is 2011.

But make sure you allow enough money to recondition the head because it will wear it much quicker.
I still think it is worth it.

It would be cheaper build a bracket on the inside for your tyre to stand up.
Maybe someone here can let you know how much it will cost to recodition the head when it finallly gives up the ghost.
