Factory Locker ?????
Factory Locker ?????
I am looking at buying an 88 GQ LWB 4.2 D. It seams to be fitted with a factory locker on the rear. It has switch on centre of dash and light in the top left hand side of gauge cluster. Can any one tell me if the factory lockers are any good? It also has a large handle for what I think is a quick release of the rear sway bar. Can any one tell me if this would have been fitted from factory?

Not bad.. You will see a large box on the rear diff pumpkin, this is the activator for the locker, but as you can see, they are out in the open, and can be smashed to bits.

yes its factory

Ive got a factory locker on mine, had it for 2.5 years. Works great. havent managed to blow it. And the actuator is behind the diff. Youd be doin pretty well if u managed to smash it.

I retrofitted the factory locker to my initially drum brake rear end shorty to a) get discs and b) get a rear locker. When I had mine installed I got all the shite on it rolled and rewelded for my DC driveshaft setup and had a bashplate made up for the actuator on the rear of the housing - evidently this has worked a few times where I would have belted it very hard on a rock...
THe factory solenoids ( The thing that directs vaccuum to the actuator) suck the c*ck big time do a search in this section for custom solenoids it will have a part number and phone number. Basically this turns the thing into an 'almost air locker' ie; comes in and out fast withing a matter of seconds where normally you can wait up to 2 mins to come off and on. The things will never work as quick as an air locker because there are less teeth to mesh with the gears which is also another reasons why you don't activate the thing while doing over 10 kms an hour - You will shed the teeth on the thing eventually if you don't treat it well..
In saying all this they are a very simple design vacuum one side of chamber sucks it on meshes a fork with the ring gears ??(right terminology ??) NB: it can take a few revolutions of the axle for it to mesh you will hear a little click. And vaccuum to the other side of the chamber sucks it out...
Strong if treated well. I thoroughly recommend the bashplate if you are going to do any kind of offroading involving unforgiving things like rocks...
Cheers,
Jeremy

PLease show us how you converted it to air operated buddy ??? I would like to try this.
But honestly the thing can only lock and unlock as fast as it can mesh so it will never be instantaneous.
Another question has anyone changed the ratios in a factory locker centre ?? I got thinking about this the other night as 35's may happen one day as will 4.6 gears.. Are these centres a nightmare to remove/replace ???

I just got a new solenoid and a air presure regulator from Norgren.
I have adjusted the presure regulator to about 2.5-3 bars, i dont think the vacum box on the diff can handle more presure than that, then i just fitted the new solenoid, giving it air from the presure regulator.
I have done a little testing, presure vs. vacum. and presure is abit faster.
Im very happy with this little mod, it gives an "airlocker" feel to the factory locker, but as you said it will never ba as fast as an airlocker, but it is much better now than it ever have been

Doesn't the actuator on the housing need sucking not blowing action to move the fork ?? If so how did you alter that ??

Just flip the pipes around. so when you want to engage the locker, you blow air in the piped that used to disengage the locker ...
