60 Series diff.... GOOOONE!!!!

Post by brighty »

Well, another pinion snapped today!!! This'd be the 2nd pinion snapped and 3rd diff I've done in my rig since easter!!!!

OK, the first time when I blew both front and rear diffs, I was playn silly buggers and fully deserved it  . But this time was just takin it easy tryn to crawl up a rock step on slippery rock rd(with open centres) and well.... the rest is left up to bush mechanics. Dropped both axles out + rear drive shaft and got home in front wheel drive.

Just wondering if the pinions on the 60 series diffs are a weak spot. I'm thinking of putting in some "non hi-tensile" bolts in the diff end of the rear drive shaft so they'll snap before the pinion, maybe even only 2 or 3 bolts too. Would this cause an off balance/wobble type of effect for the drive shaft??? And is it a resonable to assume that this is an ok sort of idea to try???

Cheers,
Brighty.

PS: Jamie, I need those back lockers now... Looks like I'm gunna keep your business going by myself!!!!

Were the new diffs def both the same ratio and set up correctly even? Almost unheard of for a diff to go pop like that. Doesn't answer you question though.

do you have a springover conversion and/or particularly soft springs? the pinions usually only snap when the axle gets wrapped up and the tailshaft can't turn properly - correctly set up they are very strong.

not as likely to need one in the front, depends on the amount of power you're pouring through it, and how soft your springs are.
