Steering "pop"

Post by neilyhead »

I have started noticing a "pop" in the steering of my 97 NL 2.8 Pajero. I can feel it in the steering wheel and often clearly hear this "pop". It can happen when turning a corner or when just engaging the clutch while driving straight. I had my mechanic look into it, but he couldn't find anything obviously wrong. He suggested it was the "knuckle" in my steering shaft, but was not certain.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Any suggestions?

Sorry if my description isn't very technical!

Check the steering hight ajustment mechanism . mine was doing strange stuff, and only after I pulled all the plastic bits away did I find that it had just bout fallen apart. every nut and bolt was loose. Its all good now.

Ball joints on the knuckle, tie rods, idler arm. Jack it up and torque on the wheels while looking for play.

Yep I'd be homing in on upper and lower balljoints, they usually make a loud clunk with sudden suspension/steering movements.

I took my Pajero to a different mechanic and he believes it is the top joint/knuckle in the steering column. It is possible to reproduce the noise whilst stationary by moving the steering wheel up and down when it is in certain positions. Do any of you guys know if this part can be replaced/serviced? I am happy that it is nothing too serious, but I don't fancy spending big $$$ to replace my steering column...

You can buy the upper steering column and separately the associated bearings, spacers & bushes new from Mitsu.
If it's a bush thats flogged out causing the clunking that would be a cheap part I'd imagine if it's inside the upper steering column/shaft your choices are new or a second hand one from a wreckers. You won't really know whats needed until your mechanic pulls it apart and finds the fault.
