Rocker Crawlers or Lockers

Ok, usual story.......I've got limited cash and am looking for the biggest bang for my limited buck.

I have currently have a 94 Zuk running 29Inc tyres with a 2 inch spring lift. My next expenditure is either going to be crawler gears or lockers. My other car is GQ patrol which I learnt to drive in which has lockers in the front and I really can see their value, but having learnt to drive in the patrol I find the Zuk always feels like its running away and I can't go slow enough.

I'm not into comps, just want to be able to go out with my club (patrol club) and have fun without getting into too much trouble.

What do people think? If you had to choose which is better? Which would you do first?

crawler gears, weld the rear, detroit the front

gears will make driving offroad much safer and saves your clutch from overuse, but won't necessarily get your further

you already know the value of lockers

if the car is not a daily driver weld both diffs and get the rock hoppers. Then bigger tyres, second hand 31x10.5's shouldn't cost too much.

2 Different storys. The locker will get ya up the hard stuff alot easier, but wif the std gearing it will not be exactly crawling over the stuff, more like kinda ramping it, and using the clutch alot. Id go the crawler gears b4 the locker, might not become as capable as yet but you will be able to crawl ova stuff and it wont run away from ya, so ya have less chance of wrecking other things. Will just have to drive the line.

yea been there done that.

go the gears first.
i did the diffs and spoa on 31' first.
looked good, but not that crash hot in the bush.

as for lockrite, i got them fitted up to a pair of wide track diff i give my hell and not a problem. no twisting or breaks. just the normal noises when it locks in on the road.

get a pair of 5.125 vit gears weld the rear air and leave the transfer case alone.
vit gears $250 each
weld $10 each
total $570

and if you have a few bucks left over get an air locker for the front.

Can you get the vit gears new, or do you have to find em s/h? How hard are they to fit? i.e. are they direct replacements for the original sierra diffs?

i agree thats what i done :D with the gearing and lockers
84 model hardtop, 86in wb, 36 iroks, locked front and rear, lux diffs, exo, power steer, fuel injected 4k corolla 1.3,auto transmission ,2in wheel spacers,3/4 elliptic rear

Thanks for the info.

Thinking I will go the crawlers. Intersted in making it a little safer first after unintended experiment last weekend about just how much of an angle I can get it on without rolling :shock:. Will do lockers after I win lotto :? . Dont want to weld diff as its mostly daily driver, 4wd only on weekends.

We have had several daily drivers with welded diffs in them on the club here in Vic. There's no need to be scared of a welded diff. They do have an effect on handling, but it is debatable as to whether it is a bad or good thing, as you get used to the effect and can drive the car more effectively once you get the hang of it.

IMHO, rockhopper gears sort of need to work with a traction aid of some sort. Due to the loss of wheelspeed, the car looses a bit of its ability to skip over obstacles, so if you have a standardish car with little wheel travel, it might actually feel like you have lost a bit of capability when you fit the RH, even though the feeling of "control" becuse of the gearing is a win.

As per one of the first posts - i;d go with the rockhopper and a welded rear. This is probably the best "bang for you buck" money you will ever spend on your car.

Can you use front and rear vit ring and pinion? or is it just the 5.12:1 front?

Golly, that's quite a dig you've done there wickedstix :D

You'll need the front ring and pinion gears from two vitaras

The rear is quite a bit larger overall and can't be used.
