Over heating proiblems with chev in shorty

Post by legsx1 »

Can peeps who have installed V8 chev LT1 or LS1 advise me what they have done to keep the engine cool especially when working it.

I have retained the Nissan GQ radiator and fitted a pair of two stage Falcon fans behind the radiator, but it goes up to 220F plus

I am now looking at fitting a oil cooler and using a product called Water Wet

ps I still have the air con condesor fitted

Any comments please

I wouldn't touch ADC, through personal experience. Had a custom rad made b y them and it was less than spectacular, from design to execution it was a botch.
Do a search on here for aluminium radiator and you'll find a bit of info and supplier details, eg pwr etc.

Cheers

must agree ADC. Over-rated radiators.PWR really is the way to go,i have one in a FJ45. It was fitted after all the so called experts said they could cure over heating woes of a 400 chev.It then actually ran a bit too cold for a chev.Chase up someone who builds sprintcars and have a word to them,or get onto PWR in Queensland as they do have a listing for GQ.......cheers Dave

try runnin a clutch fan with a shroud - they actually suck more air thru i believe in the higher rpm when the going gets hot..

I have au twin thermos on my own GQ and they're going out shortly and replaced with a clutch fan and shroud.. in an attempt to cool my car in the higher rpms.. (towin and highway driving)

I have a chev in mine too and it also runs hot while working down low. Even with a 3 core it still is way to hot. I am going to try twin 12's or 14's with custom shrow around it when I have enough cash.

Neither of my V8's ever get hot  & I'm using the std radiator core too :D

350chev:
running a 16"DavisCraig thermo on the grill side of the radiator & the std blade off engine fan on the engine side of the radiator. The engine fan is cowled and I used the stock Nissan fan cowl which fitted and did so without any mods at all.
In the eailier stages after fitting the chev, I found that even the twin thermos (AU falcon) failed to cool well enough under heavy load working conditions...... they simply couldnt pull the volume of air required to cool the motor.
A noticable differance was made by just refitting the engine fan even tho it was uncowled at the time. Once the cowl was fitted a huge differance was noticed and it was only under extreame conditions that the motor ran warmer than normal, by this I mean most of the core was clogged by mud !
I removed the clutch hub for the engine fan and fitted a plate so as to make the fan a "solid" driven unit, now most mud is sucked through the cores and ends up splattered over the engine and firewall. The thermo fan I have fitted is only used for slow crawl work where the motor is idleing over for extended periods of time.
All in all it works a treat !, only drawback is the fan noise when cruzing
malls ;) ..... not that you can hear it over the tyres

253 Holden:
I run the exact same setup here except there is no thermo fan fitted up to the radiator and I had to make a custom cowl in order to line up with the lower water pump position on the holden block.

Larry,
Not sure if this would be applicable to you, but Mike Graham had overheating issues with Hermin (SWB GQ) after he put a 350 into it. Turned out the headers/extractors were superheating the oil in the sump due to its close proximity. In the end he got the headers HPC coated and his troubles went away.

Might be worth a shot?

Alternatively, fibre-glass bonnets can be had for $150, plus $50 for a couple of vents to expell the hot air??

Cheers
Mitch
