Outback Challenge 2005
Moderator: evanstaniland
Have finally spoken to T. Trudi but she didn't have a list of final results as it was very confusing due to re-counts as others have already noted.
Norm and Kym were leading by 90 pts going into the final 3 stages and all they had to do to hold onto the top spot was to complete the 3 stages in reasonable times, which they did
But when the results were being read out they were named as 4th place getters After a fair bit of protesting by most competitors, as this just didn't add up, the scorers went away and it took another 2 hours for the mistakes to be found and the results rectified!!!! Hence the late presentation
Apparently they had not been awarded their points for getting into camp on time each night due to a paperwork filling out issue, the box was ticked and not signed or vice versa, which totalled 500 pts
Also the place getters of 3 or 4 stages were presented with medals only to have to return them after some mistakes in the placings were found. These were only found after some teams realised their score, or times I'm not sure, were wrong and put in protests
Anyway besides the hiccups in the results T. Trudi said the presentation night was fantastic and a definate improvement on previous years
T. Trudi has started the long trip home now but will hopefully post up some photos when she gets home and finds the time to do so.
They are travelling with Hobzee and Clint in the Pro Comp GU and the South Africans, as their single cab hilux is undrivable and is on the Cassaboo truck while they drive Chunck's GU tray back to Vic.
Roger and Jonesy are towing the rangie home on a trailer behind Rod McGraws (sp) Jeep as it is also undrivable
Should be good reading when the competitors get home and post up what they thought of the event and how they went
Congrats to Norm and Kym again and to all competitors for making it through, one way or another, the "One Week Of Sheer Hell"
That's all from me,
Cheers, Shane

Would you believe that mani and kevvy won it The donated their half to the royal flying doctors as well. There were a lot of sore heads this morning as I left maccas in Broken Hill. Mani may be a bit over confident and obnoxious at times but congrates for breaking into the teens. They came 11th.

Outback Challenge 2005 Results
OBC 2005 results are posted at http://CCDA.info
Recived a newsletter from Outback4x4Challenge today, with the final results and a pic of the winning truck.
They say it`s the first time a Rangie has finished outside top 3.
In OBC 2000 it was:
1. GQ Patrol, Leen and Hickman
2. Jeep TJ, Macmullen and Blegg
3. LC 60, Reilly and Storey
Five Patrols in top ten, best Rangie in 9th and a Rangie/Holden hybrid in 8th.

The trophy heads north
Norm Walters and Kym Bolton driving a Nissan Patrol have won the seventh ARB Warn Outback Challenge and in doing so have taken the coveted winners trophy to Queensland for the first time. Trent Leen and David Hickman came in second also in a Nissan Patrol whilst Dean Kilmurray and Jack Talbot took out third place making it a hat trick for Nissan.

I have few pics and videos of the challenge i'll post them up soon.
But on a short note the spectator package was disappointing and the organization of the event left a lot to be desired, so i doubt many of this years competitors will come back.
the presentation was pretty bad and every year by the sounds of it they stuff up the results for the money the receive from competitors and sponssors you would think after 7 years the event would be perfect!
All in all it was great watching the competitors and having a chat, also drinking with jornos from south africa, france, USA, and the little sotty it was great we had a ball at the mulgar pub.
cheers

i can see the head swellin
Well done and congratulations to all competitors Good to see a totally different outcome and obviously was a very challenging event.... so again extra congratulation to all entrants.
I hope one day i can be knowledgable and wise (read fit) enought to enter a OBC... i think it would be a absolutely marvelous experience and I look up to all who make the effort
Got back last night at 7.30, i have to say it was an awsome competition, the group we had was super competative which was great. There were quite a few breakdowns and we were all there working on each others trucks, all 11 from our group finished the event. The new stage were excelent, i believe it took the advantage away from those who had competed previously.
Some of the Guys we had in our group were Norm and Kim, Many and Kev, Pig and Skiddy, Redman and Jason, Roger and Jonesy, the South Africans Terance and Warner and others. I have to say that Norm and Kim did extremely well to even finish the event and definately deserve the win, congratulations guys. At the end their truck was a total wreck it had no exhaust, no engine mounts, the front of the body was held to the chassy with a ratchet strap, no power steering and the list goes on, on the first night the map sensor went and skiddy somehow got it working again, that guy is a magician, he worked on competitors cars every day including ours, thanks Skiddy you are a champ.
In total we had a few problems, at the prolog we nearly rolled it, tuesday we melted the wiring loom to the computer, wednesday it melted again, thursday we missed a washout at 120km hr launched the car and did a tyre, sheared off an oil fitting which spewed oil onto the extractors igniting the oil and setting the car on fire, while fixing the flat the highlift jack broke. Got going again next stage did a front pasenger tyre and the incab winch controler didnt work, ended up activating it from the cab using plasma cable and duct tape, thursday night the turbo shit itself, new turbo on friday morning, friday we had a clean run and on saturday the wiring went to shit again on the second last stage. But we finished and that was the main thing.
We ended up wining 6 stages, had 2 second places and 2 3rds DNF'd 3 stages and lost 100 points for outside assistance. We were 198 points behind first and missed 3rd by 19 points.
We had an absolute ball. If anyone has any photos or video footage of us PM me as i would love to get hold of a copy.
Having Many and pig in the group was a hoot, on the last night we all sat around the camp fire laughing at jokes being told by them as they tried to outdo each other.

wanna put something in club maggo about them.
yeah spoke them alot
alot of electrical issues the bloke who re-wired the rangie didnt do a good job rangieautomotive were fixing a few problems before they left however they burnt alot of fuses and stuff and the mud didnt help what so ever.
so basically electric issues were there main problem, that and cracking the chassis.
also he and i had a chat before we left and i told him a nissan was much better but he disagreed i wouldnt be surprised if they build up gq/gu when they get back instead of the rangie...
THIS YEARS EVENT KILLED RANGIES THATS WHY NISSANS WERE TOP 3

I would not guarantee that...... to set the record straight these are the hiccups we had
1 x DNS because I was fixing the three punctures I got the night before, we should have had a DNF (and 20 points) but we did not record the mandatory finish point even though we had 30 mins to spare (amateur error!)
1x DNF for rookie error
1 x DNF because I got one flat and destroyed a rim,
2 x DNS fixing wiring problems,
2 x DNF due to wiring problems,
1 x outside assistance for wiring problems,
2 x DNF because of tie rod damage
1 x DNS due to getting chassis repaired
At least we finished, and could drive the car home all be it slowly. My wife put in an excellent effort all week and I was proud of her when she won an enlarged photo from Offroad Images for her efforts in the mud.
Will we be back....probably. I have 11 months to sort out the electrical issues
The positive for us is we had no major disagreements and did not get any winching penalties.

TIGGR6 - Got the plates but not the car...
Sorry but i and most competitors were to busy running through mud, pulling winch cables in sludge, up hills, cliff faces, sand dunes, navigating entering waypoints directing drivers and repairing cars to take photos.
But where are all the photos taken by spectators, Trudy you must have a coupla hundred shots, every time i saw you a camera was in your hand. I know Juzza has a few shots
