3B into light duty 70 ?

3B into light duty 70 ?
Hello all,
I own light duty cruiser - LJ78, which has lousy underpowered 2L-TE engine.
Is it possible to swap in 3B or better 13B-T engine?
I want to keep my automatic tranny, though

Its own engines (2H,12H-T) are already heavy so it is no problem.
But light duty 70? Won't it bend my front axle with that added weight?
there isn't a lot of weight difference between 3B/13B-T and the 2H/12H-T, but the big 6 cylinder motors won't fint in the LJ78 engine bay anyway. the 3B/13B-T won't bolt to your gearbox, so you would need to source a front cut BJ74 auto if you really wanted to keep the auto. There are significant power gains with the 2L-T by upping the boost and tweaking the inlet air temp sensor to increase the fuel delivery - you can have an extra 10 - 15 horsies for next to zero $ spent.

I think there is no point in tuning the dead. Or close to dead. 2L-T is not very reliable even in its stock form, pulling more power will make things even worse.
And the timing belt... I don't like it. Did I say paranoia?
Is there absolutely no way to keep my tranny ( think $$$)? Or it doesn't make sense because of complexity and reliability (probably my AT is designed for weaker engines) ?

your driveline is hilux so put a 3l t/d with auto from a jap import
I have a13bt auto and it goes hard enough and my middy comes in at 2.2t have a look at the link http://www.bitwalla.com/cruisers/information/engines.html

the 2L-TE is only unreliable when it does not get the required maintenance, or if the combustion temperatures get too high. they can be highly tuned to produce plenty of power if you are careful.
The timing belt is not a liability on the L series engines, they almost never break and need replacement only every 100,000km. The belt is quieter and more efficient than the gear drive of the B and H series motors, and is economically replacable. if you ever need to replace the gears in a B or a H motor, have a stack of cash ready.
check the production plate on the firewall to see which gearbox you have. it is always "possible" to adapt a particular engine to a particular gearbox but it can be difficult and the cost can be prohibitive. by far the cheapest and easiest way to do what you want to do is to get a 13B-T with A440F auto from a BJ74 and drop the whole thing in, but be aware that your 8" differentials will probably suffer the consequences of all that torque, and you will have to uprate the front springs to cope with the weight of the motor.
If you really want a more powerful, stronger LWB 7X series, upgrade to a HZJ 75 (or 78) and fit an aftermarket turbo - this will probably end up cheaper than the conversion you are considering!
cheers

Hi there, actually the 2LT is quite a little power house, but if you really wanna change may I suggest as follows.
Fit either 5L which is 3 litres, or 3L which is 2.8Litres. Both form hilux and will fit directly into you LJ. Just a case of one engine out, another engine in.
Better to have the turbo fitted on the 5L or 3L as well.
Or, if you really want, go for the 1KZ.

well, i have a 3B in my middy and will need to repower it to run bigger tyres (when i get them ??)
can anyone comment on what option to follow from:
1. turbo the 3B (about $3k)
2. 13BT (about $4.5k). but can sell 3B
3. 14BT (no idea $) sell 3B
4. something else?
also, will all B motors bolt up or will i need adapters
Cheers

all B family motors will bolt up. you can custom turbo your 3B for well under $1000 if you have some fabrication skills.
all that aside, the 3B will turn 35's without too much trouble especially if you re-gear the diffs or transfer.

thanks dumbdunce, will have to consider turbo the 3b again. problem is my fabrication skills arent that good. was thinking the 13/14bt's because being direct injection thought would run alot better. what sort of work do i need to do to get a turbo going for 1K.
gearing is another option too i guess, cos i know gearbox needs work as lost synchro in 1st and 2nd about year ago, clutch is apparantly bit dodgey too (not to me but ...) .....
thanks for the reply. all keen to do some serious mods after going to tuff truck, just need to convince the minister of war & finance
MKarmyshev wrote:Where can I check which transfer cases were used in different Land Cruisers?
I'm curios if A440F from BJ74 will mate with my t/case or I'll have to replace it too...
A440F in BJ74 uses essentially the same transfer as in your LJ78, however there may be differences. if you are getting a front cut BJ74 just use the whole assembly - engine, gearbox and transfer, and place it in the LJ engine bay, hopefully you can get the trasfer in the same place so you don't have to mess with drive shafts, and only need to fabricate the front engine mounts. you might even get away with using the crossmember from the BJ74.
