Crawford wrote:Hey i have a 87 1.3L sierra... Just wondering what oil i should use for it.. it goes through it pretty fast especially while 4wding.. i assume the thicker the better or what?
Does it make much difference?
Cheers
thicker oil aint good for them, but if the engine is already tired, it does help.
mine smokes a lot and uses heaps of oil, when using normal grade.
I now use 70 weight oil, idles a lot slower,m tappets rattle till warmed up, but uses less oil and don't smoke very often.
So I would say yes to thick oil if its stuffed already.

Chops - It could be either. When me and my dad first had a look at it it was running on three and spitting a little bit of oil. Its been running on 4 for ages and when it starts it sprays soot on the white driveway . So not sure of the mysterious substance... its either oil or soot... I'd spose my exhaust is dirty as hell though...
Eh, I might actually take a look now, I just assumed its oil as thats what it was doing before. Heres to hoping its not oil... I don't think I can afford it.

"It has the aerodynamics of a brick." - Comment about the Sierra by my dads mate.

It most likley is soot from a rich mixture conbined with the condensation from the exhaust. If its spitting oil out the exhaust, then you got issues to sort out dude. Take a close look to be sure.
