Twinnie,
I got a rebuilt ECU for a SWB NH 3l (red J Top) for $250 in Canberra six months ago. Talk to Trill (female mechanic) at Braddon Shell Servo. She replaced mine when she was at the Shell Campbell servo.
She will remember me as she replaced all of my injectors while trying to solve the problem. Turned out to be ECU and I got new injectors at cost with no labour.
Replace ECU first then, fix other things. When the ECU goes it goes into a kind of limp mode and other things appear to be playing up, which arent really.

Experience is something you don't get, until just after you need it.
