NA 2.6l dead as can be need advice on new engine

Post by Drift Technician »

Hey guys, been a little while. Ive blown the 2.6 donk in the swb i have here, wish to replace it asap. However ive been told that they are a wide block 2.6 (4g54) and that sigma engines wont bolt in (i understood i would need to swap the sump and oil pickup over). Other advice i get is that manual sigma 2.6 engines are exactly the same and will fit once the sump is swapped over. Can someone please help me on this? Will the engine mount points still be the same and will the gearbox bolt up to the sigma 4g54?

Cheers

A member on the Pajero Club Forum recently swapped a Sigma 2.6 into his Pajero. He had to redrill bell-housing bolts and dowels, probably because he started with an auto 2.6 rather than the manual.

Have a search on the forum and read the report.

Cheers,

Yes the manual Sigma 2.6 (narrow block) will bolt in but you will need your original sump. Your gearbox will bolt up but you will have to use your original clutch to be sure as some Sigma's ran the Borg Warner box (as opposed to the Jap box) which uses a different clutch.

thanks guys for the input, I was looking at putting a 1UZFE out of a late model soarer in there (quad cam v8) but there is no kit available yet. WOuldnt mind the v6 conversion kit that Marks 4wd offers but at $1900 for the kit itself before engine is a little too much to justify the swap.

I think i will try the sigma engine swap, I read the report a few down but couldnt find the info in regards to what sigma engines to use hence my question. The Paj/Triton specific engines seem to be fetching decent $$$$ at the wreckers, i can buy 4 whole sigmas for what they want for the price of the engine

look i know i'm just a noob etc but...

as stated in the post above the sigmas came with both the 13 and 12 inch blocks....13 = manual 12=auto the manuals are the ones for the paj's
the clutch is the same between the borg warner and the jap box...i knnow this cause i have changed borg to jab millions of times (4 in total) with no clutch changing...

on the motor the sumps need changing from the sigma to the pajero. i also recomend using an astron 2 as opposed to the normal astron as thats what the pajero's came with... the inlets are different on the 2 motors

the only real use for the 12inch blocks is if u have a l300 4wd van as i do.... take the crappy 1800 out and throw it at something..then u can bolt an auto block strait up to the box in the van.... of course u need to put the fly & clutch on it first but u get the idea.....

also if u buy a motor from a wrecker be careful that u actually get a 2.6... some have tried to sell me 2L motors and told me they are 2.6's...the best way to tell is at the back of the inlet side of the block there will be a large 4G52 stamp on the 2L blocks and a 4G54 on the 2.6L's however some of the 2.6 blocks have no stamps (usually earley ones) so generally if u see 52 its not for you... and measure the bell housing between the dowel's before u take it :)

Borg Warner clutch plate is 23 spline and 26.0mm diameter.
Mitsu clutch plate is 23 spline and 26.25mm diameter.
Both clutch plates are 225mm overall diameter.
I changed from a 5sp Borg Warner box in my GJ Sigma to a Mitsu 5sp KM132 (later Sigma's & Scorpions) and left the Borg Warner clutch in but found it was binding so had to put in a Mitsu clutch. I also had to use the Mitsu tailshaft as the two boxes are different lengths.

yeah the tailshafts are a hassel in the sigmas... i've 3 different lengths in the later models and some of the 2L splines are small and some are the same as the 2.6 :?
