I am thinking or selling my hilux and have been offered a 60 series GLX 89 model with 297,000klms on the clock duel fuel 5 speed .
Have used the search function but not much came up .
Would like to get as much info as possible like ,reliabilty of motors and gear boxs and diffs and any common problems people have had with their trucks. Also what sort of fuel ecconomy do people get out of their petrol motors.

I have a 1984 HJ60 (diesel). I can't comment on the petrol version except to say that they are thirsty.
They are built tough. Arguably the toughest built land cruiser ever. Mine, with diff locks, is almost unstoppable and I love it. For a cheap, capable and reliable 4wd you really can't go wrong.
Check for rust, that's about the only thing that can kill a 60!

Great car, not as tuff as the 40's but alot more civilised.
Mines A 84 HJ60, my mates is a 83 HJ60. Apart from busting Steering Arms there good trucks. Tuff as nails, comfortable and plenty good enough to sleep in when the missus kicks you out.
PS pumps tend to leak the the main seal, especially with big tyres/low PSI, pinions are weak, but these are all easy(ish) fixes.
What i know about petrols, is there thirsty, most are converted to LPG, i had A 2f in my 45 ute and if it wasnt on gas i wouldnt drive it

The old girl has crossed Oz three times (via the Simpson twice), gone from top to bottom about 4 times, numerous club trips (mild to wild), entered in gymkahna's/mudlarks, etc,etc.
With all the kays and rough trips, she's only had regular servicing and the usual minor repairs. Brakes, wheel brgs, seals, 2 radiators, etc.
The standard driveline can cope with a lot of grunt/power. (6.2 V8 for the last 4 yrs)
The petrols are thirsty, but offer loads of power and grunt for a 4 litre six. Extractors and 2.5 exhaust (and a light foot!) help to ease fuel economy.
If I money to burn I'd get another one making it THREE in the driveway!!
and this is not jus the Bundy Bear runnin amok in my noggin.......

now im definately interested in getting one.
i also had a look at a late 80s Sahara today, Turbo Diesel, had done over 350kms and they wanted 11,999 but it wasnt in real good condition. they have everything that the 1980s could offer inside them though - very typical 80s Japanese luxury!!!
i had a drive of a diesel today, they arent as bad as people make them out to be, no speed deom, but definately adequate - pick up is better than my v8 rangie!!!!

they rust out in the roof and in the pillars
check for rust, tap along the dges of the roof, look for any small points of rust (rusty ius coming from the inside so is much worse than it looks from the outside).
the 3F is thirsty but youve got gas so not an issue. THink theyve got about 100kW so not a powerhouse but definantly enough power (diesel has 75kw).
gearbox is pretty tough, might be getting a bit stiff in gears at 280k, but they will do 400thousand if not abused, 500+ if treated right.
diffs will doo 500thousand if not abused
transfer has the usual toyota problem, oil moving from transfer to gearbox starving the transfer of oil, easily fixed with return hose. otherwise the transfer is pretty tuff.
gxl is nice. buy it

Another thing that i have heard is that the 60series that have the 2High or Low (cant remember which it was) button on the dash - sometimes this system plays up - someone might be able to confirm this though.
i cant beleive the price of the HJ61 Turbo Diesels - still pretty expensive for a late 80vehicle, almost worth goin for a 80series.

I've had my 60 for a year now. It's an 85 HJ60 with 355000 kms. I've serviced it regularly since i got it and it is yet to miss a beat(touchwood). The only thing I've down is busted a c.v joint while offroad I paid $6200 and IMHO is is one tuff truck. Wouldn't mind a 12h-t tho

I have also seen an 88 with the some "surface rust" on the back side of the roof, same location you see all the 81's etc bogged. Problem is, its not surface rust, its coming from the inside out, so give it about a year and they will be holes.
88 - 90 cruisers are 3-9 years younger than the 81-85 cruisers we all see bogged up (badly), so you cant compare them side by side, instead, compare what the 86 cruiser looked like 4 years ago.
Yes they still have the problems with rust in the roof, it may be less severe, so maybe toyota did try to avert the problem, but it still exists.
solution?
Get some fisholeen, drop your headliner around the edges (doors etc) and spray a good helping of that over the top of the inner fold of metal..
do this every 6-12months and you wont have a problem again with rust.
Theres a guy on here whos old man did this and it hasnt got a spot of rust anywhere on the roof and its an 84 i think and has been to the beach on a few ocasions, mine has never seen beachwork ever (been in family all its life), and still has rust in the roof.
Can of fisholeen is about 6bucks. Fisholeen doesnt stain like some of the other rust preventatives, might leave a bit of a shadow on the headliner if you get it on it, but some of the others, penetrol etc will stain your headliner badly.
AFAIK they came standard after the 'upgrade'. They are a very weak/poor lsd tho. Mines an 84 and had been resprayed a few years at least before I purchased it, I was on the manta ray barge to fraser talking to a guy working on it, he reckons the metallic blue colour was crap and the paint fell off very quick and other colours did not suffer this same fate.
I have 1 spot of rust in my passenger front pillar, a very small bubble on the bottom of the passenger rear door, and light surface rust on he love taps and scrapes. All this rust was in it when I purchsed it 2 years ago.
Installed an erps in it when I got it, figured if it could help any car it would have to be a 60. Doubt it would help the pillars much but its been 2 years and I cant say its gotten any bigger. I won't be convinced for another couple of years anyway :) It has spent almost a month on fraser this last year already.
