How do you thinks these would go in a GQ ute. Any one done it and are they easy to do.

yes the rd28t box as well and they go for not much these days ... seen a driveline from a 2.8 td go for 750 (what i sold mine for) and a few others have popped up now and then.Beastmavster wrote:If this is the 300ZX donk they're expensive to maintain and have a reputation for being fragile - whether that's true or due to poor maintainance is another issue.
Would probably be compatible with bellhousing swap to the RB30 box.
VQ not VG guys.
VQ30 is an all alloy 3 litre na and turbo versions. There's also the na VQ35.
Corker of an engine (if you like v6's) but probably too small for something like a GQ, factory setup the DET doesn't start making boost till too high in the rev range for an offroad application IMO.
Produces good horsepower, but lacks lowend torque that only displacement is going to give you, which you need to get a heavy GQ moving. In something like a buggy or very light vehicle they would be a contender I'd think.
For the same money as a VQ30DET engine only you could easily pick up a VH45 front cut (I bought one recently for $1800), bit heavier but better match for a Patrol.

VQ35de = 350z motor = approx 208kw factory tuning, I think you can squeeze 230 kw (flywheel figures) with a remap of the factory ecu.
VQ30de = maxima motor = approx 160kw, also able to squeeze a bit more out of this engine because it's very restricted from the factory.
VG30xxx = old motor from 300zx, z31/z32.
I would say you will get a lot of reliability issues with the VG's, due to their age (around 15+ years).
Which leaves the maxima motor, which I would guess will be a hell of a lot cheaper to source then the 350z varient.
They arn't really setup for a lot of low down torque though, which is probably what you really want in a fourbie --> a dirty big v8 would fit the bill better, and if you run it on gas will have a lot less hassles getting it past the ADR's etc.

maximas are a front wheel drive arnt they? and if so, can you use that engine for rear wheel drive??foad wrote:VQ35de = 350z motor = approx 208kw factory tuning, I think you can squeeze 230 kw (flywheel figures) with a remap of the factory ecu.

I'd say it's very similar to the RWD 3.5L version - you'd want to see the bore/stroke and see if thats how they reduced the capacity.
You can fit a RWD SR20 to a FWD car, but you need to either make a custom intake plenum, or use the one from the GTIR pulsar SR20 version (usually hard to find).
It's been done, wouldn't be surprised if it could be done with the maxima engine as well but is it really worth the hassle/price ?
Chev V8 is an easy conversion --> been done before, all the potential problems are known, bucketloads of torque and generally more suited to the application IMO.

Hey,
Pathfinder block is VG same as Navara (Dunno about new pathy and navara)
That VQ30DET... i don't think that exists unless it is Jap Spec engine.
As for VQ35DE you may can put it in Patrol, One wonderful thing about patrol is they have beam axle on both ends so more easier to fit Z block than Maxima one... because Maxima is east-west desigination with diff in sump (same as Pulsar GTi-R Sr20DET)
Hope it helps

Should I get another 4wd?
VQ30DET definitely exists. It can be found in Japanese specification Cima, Leopard and Gloria. They were only ever shipped from factory with automatic or CVT gearboxes.
The VQ series motors are found in RWD form in Australia in the 350Z so that is probably an option for a manual gearbox. The new Oz spec Pathfinder uses a VQ40. The VQ series have been in use in the US for many years in SUVs. Our American friends have discovered that using the bellhousing, flywheel and clutch from one of these SUVs allows the very common 300ZX 5 speed to be bolted up to the VQ series motors. Alternatively, source a 6 speed gearbox from a wrecked VQ35DE powered R35 Skyline and bolt that up.
One of the greatest advantages to the VQ series motors is weight. They are one of the lightest V6s you will ever find. I have seen an unconfirmed quote of about 50kg for a long motor.
Richard.

Lots of things you can do with a pathfinder. It is a VG30E from memory. Swap in a twin turbo engine from a 300ZX. Will bolt right up. 206kW stock and tunable to 500kW or more if you get a little silly.bogged wrote:missus has a 2001 pathfinder, its a slug... Actually, 2001 Pathy has VG33, you can also have exhaust system custom made using Z32 300ZX headers if you don't want to wet your missus pants...rlaxton wrote:Lots of things you can do with a pathfinder. It may "bolt right up" but it certainly won't "bolt right in" a VG30DETT from a 300ZX is a physically bigger engine then a small block V8 Chev. I have owned a TT Z32 300ZX and i certainly wouldn't waste my time sticking one in a 4WD, they are a great engine in a 300ZX, but only in a 300ZX, i'd go with some kind of V8 before i would consider one of those enginesrlaxton wrote: Lots of things you can do with a pathfinder. The only reason they are bigger is 4 OHC vs pushrods... Surely there is enough room in a pathfinder engine bay for the extra width? Sure a V8 might be a better 4WD option with better bottom end torque but he was asking for power. The V8 would be a lot more work and cost to fit. The VG30DETT should suite gearbox and engine mounts and require only plumbing, wiring and fuel pump.r0ck_m0nkey wrote: It may "bolt right up" but it certainly won't "bolt right in" a VG30DETT from a 300ZX is a physically bigger engine then a small block V8 Chev. Also, try get Unichip tuned to suit the pathy block if you want better economy without running rich on fuel.bogged wrote:yea that sounds good... not too rich a mod, not interested in donk swaps, but openign it up may be an optionMcJeff wrote:Actually, 2001 Pathy has VG33, you can also have exhaust system custom made using Z32 300ZX headers if you don't want to wet your missus pants...
