I did a thread of this ages ago . . my question never got answered ...
it got highjacked
so I'm gonna run a 4" kit for the GQ ute .... any particular length shock I have to get? .... they will be procomp shocks can get them dirt cheap
what travel length and all that do I need to know?

unless your buying them as a kit you will have to fit the coils and then measure the extended length and the compressed length.

do you want to change the mounts to get them to work better or do you want a quick bolt on job???
RS 9005 is the longest shock you can use on the back without changing anything else. 12" travel. RS 9159 for the front, about 9.5" of travel.
If you want to go longer, you really need to start hacking up the mounts.

if your shocks are the right size you dont need to clamp them.
When i did my 7" lift the second longest rancho was too short for the rear but the 9012 was about 60 mm too long, i tried a couple of different straps but they broke or the mounts bent or broke :( .
Got sick of it so i clamped the bottom of the springs and welded cones to the top mounts to keep them relocated, no trouble since
the 9014's in the front were ok.

i only drive it on weekends and thats going to and from a 4wd spot at night, also with no body lift and 35's it looks fairly normal until its compared to something else

yeah 7" is huge though ... I was only thinkin 4-5 inches of lift to easy to fall over on the tracks if u fall in a rut up here

Getting the angles right has taken engineering joints heaps of time, money and effort.
I'd put it in the "too hard basket"

i think clearance issues would make it hard to do a link on a 4" lift, drop brackets would be just as bad too.

If you buy your 3-4 in lift as a kit you shouldnt have any dramas as to the length of your shocks. the kit I just fitted is 4in kings with enforcer shocks and dampner for $800 good ride and articulation Alyhough i used 80 series shocks for the front ( standard) as fit the 4in lift well and are cheaper than the extended nissan ones

If i were you mate, id be going for a 6" kit, i run Rancho RS9000, and there holding up well. Ive also heard great things about the Procomps. ive got a 6" kit in my 91 GQ LWB, ive got the 2" body lift going in some time soon, along with 35" MTR's and some Diff gears, im waiting for a mate to get back to me on complete GU diffs, and what gears are in em. go the 6" id say.
