Alternator

Post by Tiny »

coming home from a trip behind lithgow last nigh I smelt some burning rubber looked at the intrument panel and noticed way to many lights on, no charge, hit the clutch, very heavy and pulled over, braked very heavy.

Car is a TD42 patrol, turns out the alternator was not spinning (vac pump on rear assists brakes and clutch) mate not far behind me stopped and we looked at it but with no light we decided to limp it to the nearest light but is started spinning and functioning properly.

Got to the windsor air base and it happened again, but didn't self fix, limped home, and tried this morning, still farked. Bearing seized???

its a recon less than 2 months since install :bad-words: bastards say, just tke it out and bring it over :bad-words: :x :x I have no farking brakes and a farking heavy clutch

Your diagnosis sounds pretty good though, unless the belt is just too loose to turn it under load (a long shot, but worth checking.)

You do still have brakes and clutch if you press the pedal hard enough; just stand on the pedals!

yeah, clutch is managable, about as heavy as my mated falcon ute, but the brakes need a lot of weight to do fark all, belt is slightly loose, but no overly.

Tiny, just been through a similar ordeal with my TD42 GQ.

I was going to have my alternator rebuilt, but costs were around $250 to $700 depending on what was required.
Decided not to take a gamble, and found the cheapest place was www.aea.com.au

I had my patrol at my mechanics, who ordered it from them for me, had it there the same afternoon, and fitted up. About $520 for supply and fit. Obviously less if you get it yourself and fit. ( I think it was about $460ish).
Part No "ALT 7055" suited mine. Now 70amp Hitachi, stock was 60amp. Comes with a new vac pump.

I couldn't find a better deal than that.
