Coaling 80

Post by 80diesel4play »

HI all.

Over the wekend for the first time ever - on steep decents, low 1st, compression braking brought intermittent blue smoke. What gives? those behind me let me know how much the smell really honked on the nose as well - and it wasn't my bum.

I was a bit lost because it wasn't all the time =- just when she was really loaded up and others when we hit 2000 rpm - seemed odd as!

I figure it needs rings or soemthing as it seems like drawback up the cylinders?

Any ideas?

it's not uncommon for that motor (or lots of other diesels) when on a steep hill, you get the crank whipping up the oil and creating a lot of oil droplets/vapour in the crankcase, which gets sucked into the crankcase breather and straight in the inlet manifold. if you overfill the oil or hit too steep a hill the motor can start running on its own oil and you can't shut it down, there are cases where motors have done this and have made so much torque/rpm on the oil alone that even killing it with the clutch didn't work - result one fried clutch and one toasted motor.

anyway to eliminiate this as a possibility, disconnect the crankcase breather (little 90 degree bend hose off the rocker cover to the inlet crossover), and cover the hole in the inlet with a plug or something. route the hose off the rocker cover into a filter or something. take it for a drive and observe the results.

cheers

I haven't noticed this on downhills but a little on uphills. Or maybe thats just normal, and then again it was before i had the injectors done... (1HZ motor)

Would installing some sort of oil catch can help??

Lift the tappet cover off and fold the 2 flaps up(underside of t/cover at the high end) This should help stop oil getting out of the engine. Anyone with a turbo should have this done.
Catch cans should be fitted to anything that you intend driving on its side or upside down. They can possibly save an engine if it gets on the wrong angle for two long.
I'm not stuck I'm over here!

Injectors have never been done in the 120,000 k's I've owned the car....
No boost yet but coming soon - need to get the engine back up to spec before I add psi..
