tail shaft unis

okay, i just lifted my GQ SWB auto on the weekend, the lift went really well, took it for a test drive, and found a few really bad vibes as you would expect,

the first was wheels, as they had a smaller hub centre, and were not seating properly, swapped wheel vibe lessened,

now i also found tail shaft unis are rooted,

what is the procedure to change these,

i know, you will all be saying, get a double cardin joint, i have researched this, and will be going this option i think, got quoted $650, supply brand new cardin joint, straightened, ballanced, and all the usual stuff,

When you put in the double cardin joint you have to make sure that the rear normal uni joint is nearly straight otherwise your vibrations will be worse than what you started with. You will have to wind out your adjustable upper trailing arms so your diff is pointing straight up the shaft but not dead straight and then your springs will be shaped like bananas and your shocks will be fully hitting springs and bump stop so you will have to do some cutting and welding. Just want to save you the pain and torture I went through.

thanks for the info, the shocks are already thoughing the springs now, i dont want to have to go through cuttin off al the spring and shock mounts to rotate it that far,

ozy how high is ur lift? i have 5 inch coils and still use standard shaft..much stronger than d/c and cv shafts but angles need to be set up right...u sure its uni vibes? manually check them and see if they move.. my guess if u havent checked will be angle related rather than crap uni's..also vibes come from the spline of the shaft when u pull them longer with a lift

longer lower arms, raised engine mounts, gear box spacers.. ull fix all ur tailshaft angle woes if u work out the best combo of the above fix it bits..and u wil also keep ur standard shaft...if u need any help setting up let me no.. steve

okay, replaced the unis in the shaft tonight, the old ones were really notchy and tight in places,

ill put the shaft back in over the week end, and see how it goes, the splines seem tight,

i will be getting 3rd's lowers soon, just waiting on some money, butother than that, its all sweet at the moment,

as for lift, they are 6" coils, prob sitting around the 7" mark as the came out of my wagon.

i picked up a gq ute front double cardian shaft for $100 off this board. get it modded to suit the rear would be $130. bit cheaper than $650. look for one as a cheap way out

ozy the slip joint wont feel physically worn or tight or have any wobble.. it is just when u pull it out to make it reach the now lifted truck it seems to make it make the drone noise when u spin it up at highway speeds..i guess the spline has less contact patch or something..
