Re: basics
fuel filter and air filters are AOK maybe I will run some injector cleaner through, but have heard bad things like cleaning too much stuff up and killing the motormav wrote:best to start with the basics, air filters and fuel filters including the one in the top of the pump inlet, then see if it is any better.

Tiny quick check list,
How long has it been blowing black smoke?
As you have stated the smoke level is inceasing, in what way, more smoke with less right foot or draker coloured smoke at same driving conditions?
When you post anything for asking for help give as much detail as possible as it could save you a lot of time and money.
But from you post I would say your injectors are starting to leak, as to the possiblity of the pump suppling to much fuel this is unlikely unless you or someone has played with the full load setting screw on the pump. see if the anti-tamper cover is still on the screw if not then the lock nut is tight.

no boost gauge, but has an exaust leak I tried to fix with putty as there is not enough room to fit the gasket in without unbolting the turbo.....the leak fixed for a while and there was less smoke, but the leak is back worse than ever and the black smoke is back so sound to me now like it is not enough boost for the fuelGutSquisher Media wrote:Tiny quick check list,

As jessie suggests fix your exhaust leak first (you'll have too anyway) making sure if you remove the turbo to replace that gasket as well.
It sounds like when your turbo was fitted the people who did the job also screwed the full load setting screw in to supply more fuel.
It may of been a little to much for the motor to be blowing a shit load of smoke. For the small loss of boost you would have lossed with a blow exhaust gasket will only be in the range of 3 - 4 psi and that is only if you had a small exhaust housing and exhaust pipe, this small loss would not generate the amount of smoke you discribe.
You'll be best to get a pyro gauge to measure exhaust temp, for if your motor is been supplied with as much fuel as I think it is you may end up cooking your pistons.

Ok get to it.
Replace the exhaust gasket, but before you put it all back together take the manifold to an exhaust fitter or engine rebuilder and get the matting face of it ground flat.
You will find if you miss this you will blow the gasket again.
Also tell me what size exhaust system is on your rig, the bigger the better as too much back pressure on the turbo will slow the response of the turbo building boost, most turbo TD42’s can run straight though exhaust systems with only a HOTDOG too remove the drone.
