Prop Shaft lenghts, Help please

G'day all,

I have come to the putting prop shafts on my project 90.

Now I am trying to use Range Rover front prop shaft's, but I want to make sure they will fit and work properly for the distance I have. I measured the length between the flanges which is 635mm (for the front shaft), now the Range Rover shaft is 615mm (full compression and 655mm full extension).

Now how do I know there is enough movement in the slip joint on up travel? what about enough for down travel.

The rear distance between the flanges is 648mm, would I be able to use a similar shaft? (the other shaft I have is 620mm full compression and 660mm on full extension) or will I need to get a longer one? maybe a spacer at one end ?

Not being a mechanic or nothing, but it sounds like the front should be ok. The distance between flanges at rest is half way between full extension and compression of the tail shaft. So, I would assume it would be ok, but I may be wrong. Also, 40mm doesnt seem much for a spline length. Dunno about the rear, you only have 12mm between half way and full extension. You could always try it over some easy stuff and see if the spline drops out.

measure a rangie at rest and compare it.

Put the thing on chassis stands
remove wheels
remove springs
leave shocks attached
jack diff to full compression - measure length
jack diff to full extension - measure length
jack diff to full articulation both ways - measure
make sure shaft has 25+mm of engagement at full extension and doesnt bottom out before shortest length.

Dont bugger around guessing or looking at static lengths.
