Commodore V6 to Lux
I havn't found enough info by searching so I'll just ask. Who's got one and how did conversion go. Marks stuff will be used but I want to know what bits other people used like which power steer pump and who made plumbing? Which fuel pump and where located? Which ac compressor and who plumbed it? The q's never end. Marks can tell me what they use but I want to know what others have crafted.
Well while ATM i dont have a 4x4 i am running a 22r motor in a 2wd lowlux... tis the 2nd motor... cheapish second hand deal done with a guy in Emerald.. He converted his 4x4 to v6.. nice job to.. I cant give many details bout it coz i dont know any, but do plan on returning up there to thank them again for a sound and reliable second hand motor! think he had trouble with breather hoses off memory... being VERI close to Firewall..
My question lies right... about....
HERE: Can this Mod be done to a 2WD hilux!??

Just finished one... (COULD GET ALL THE PICS YOU WANT TOMORROW) A/C was plumbed by my mate (I was doing the lockers) we used the Commodore compressor and run the condenser behind the cab with a thermo fan, fitted nicely in the contour of the wall. The fuel pump used was a commodore V8 pump which we ran IN a surge tank which we made to suit... Power steering still to be done... we will be using the original P/S pump... will be plumbing ourselves (waiting on steering box)
Because I can...

CONT. Oh yeah almost forgot.... THE PROBLEMS... had a radiator made (desert cooler) and the hose running to the water pump came mighty close to the A/C compressor and the water pump pulley was even closer to the electric fan, so we moved the radiator about 1/2 in forward... The P/Steer reservior (series I) is mounted ON the pump which was hittin the bonnet so we done a 2" bodylift... could also make a fitting and hose to a firewall mounted reservior. Wanna know more... just ask

Ask specific questions and I can give specific answers on what I've done. Mines not finished and never seems to be even close. I always urn out of time or money.
1. I have got the stock v6 PS pump on there. I have no issues its resevoir with it hitting the bonnet. The resevoir is mounted on the pump so I dont konw why unwritten had a clearance prob. Maybe the series one is higher again or he fabed his own mounts (which isnt a bad idea). REally you dont want to be running a series one anyway. The s2 is a better motor and easier conversion. It will be plumbed to a IFS sterring box by a mate......
gotta go. continued at home.

2. The high pressure pump I used was an aftermarket external commo v6 one. It will be mounted inline between the fuel rail and surge tank. A cheap lift pump is mounted on the surge tank.
3. With the AC if I were gonna do it I'd use the commo compressor and the rest hilux gear. Mainly for ease of mounting. Just get the lines made up by an ac shop. The only other thing I'd think of using from the commo would be the condensor as I imagine its a bit bigger. But then you have to custom mount it.
as far as the radiator goes I've mounted mine in the rear so that I can use a larger (and cheap) aftermarket falcon radiator and thermos. Getting a custom one was too expensive for my liking and a lot of people seem to still have colling issues with the stock diesel one.

Perfect. Thats the stuff I'm after, thanks guys. To start with, already have VT engine and Lux has a body lift. What about the cast iron exhaust manifolds. Did you use them or are there extractors available off the shelf. Custom very $$$! Did you use the original air box and did it plumb roughly the same? Did you lay out the loom around engine bay, plug everything back in and cut what wasn't needed? What sort of things did you make instead of buying of people like Marks? It's these little things only you can help with. I've been to Marks several times and the little items list keeps growing.
I'm using a set of extractors on my Hilux. They were standard commo extractors and fitted on without any mods. The guy in the exhaust shop said he has done a few, and some needed modifying and some didn't. I think it was mainly 2wd Hiluxs that needed modifying.
The conversion was done in my Hilux when I bought it, so I can't answer too many questions. But I have swapped motors and changed things since, so can answer a few. The wiring in mine is ugly (but it works), and after seeing other V6 conversion, using the Marks loom is much neater. Of course, if your good with electrics, you could do it yourself and make it look just as neat.
I'm using the standard commo airbox and ducting, and it seems to fit nicely in the Hilux engine bay.
I've got a standard Hilux Diesel radiator, with a 16 inch thermo, and so far I haven't had any overheating hassles, but haven't done alot of work in real hot temperatures. Standard commos do run hot. The thermostat doesn't open until about 91 degrees, and the fan doesn't turn on until 107, but they also run a higher pressure radiator cap (meaning they can run hotter before boiling).
I did have to move the heater valve off the firewall. It was conflicting with the accelerator cable bracket. I ended up getting a heater valve off a falcon that works off engine vacuum (rather than cable) and it now just floats in the water hoses (no need to bolt it to the firewall).
I'm using a VL external fuel pump. It seems to work fine, but I have replaced it once, so I'm interested to see how long the current one lasts. I've been told it should be mounted lower, as it's pretty high compared to the fuel tank.

We wired it up ourselves, using the VP fuse panel (from strut tower) and also ran all accesories from there as well... if you are electrically illiterate, GET SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING. It will save you alot in the long run (I have never used an aftermarket harness so I can't promote them... WAIT... yes I can, they sell don't they?)
Standard manifolds were used. As for the heater valve mentioned it should clear nicely with the body lift. Also mentioned, airbox should tuck away in there nicely.
Are you going to be running the auto with the transfer adapter or is the Lux just having the engine conversion???

Scott could you provide a little more detail about this? I don't know much about heaters and stuff- w/out the cable how is the heat setting adjusted?Scott wrote:I did have to move the heater valve off the firewall. Don't worry about the heater valve unless it hits. All my mounts are custom which is probably why it hits.slosh wrote:

Commodore and Falcon heater valves open and close by vacuum. Behind the dash are lots of vacuum lines. The knobs apply or block vacuum to the heater valve.
On mine, I just have the heater valve permanantly open. The knob on the dash is still hooked to the heater airbox with a cable, which is where most of the temperature adjustment is done. If I slide the knob to cool, I still get cool air, but probably not as cool if the valve was closed. I'll fix it properly one day so the valve opens and closes, but it isn't a problem at the moment.
I used a HZ 3 core V8 radiator with inbuilt tranny cooler in my vehicle.
I fabbed my own surge tank out of ally for about $50, it used a factory jap lift pump and the Holden in line injection pump from VL/Camira.
I used the Marks wiring harness adaptor and it was good.
A 1in body lift cleared the radiator cap and the heater control.
I used the factory VP air box and ducting and it fitted nicely, however I don't think that Holden designed the air box and filter for 4wd applications.
I would recommend using the Commodore air con pump and power steering pump and plumbing them to the hilux stuff for the simplicity of the engine mounting.

Thanx for all the info guy am in the middle of doing the same conversion at the moment am trying to do it as cheap as posible any hints on wiring and speedo would be gr8 am thinking of using the vp fuse box as sugested did any one fabricate there own mounts and what about sump mods I am using the marks t700 to transfer adapter in my 85 ifs 4 runner will be taking heaps of pics so hopfully that will help the next bloke
IF IT DOESNT KILL YA IT WILL ONLY MAKE U STRONGER

Get someone that knows what they are doing! Just sorting mine out. Had some issues finding wiring in the original stuff, as colours changed within the loom (must have been last one done on a friday!)
Used one but only about half the relays in it. Deleted alot of unnessecary things. I used the toyota box so sorry can not help with speedo for you.gpetti wrote: using the vp fuse box
Used a marks sump too-easy for me cause im not a welder.
