Imported Pajeros?

Hey Mate,
I bought a 1989 Import with 80,000 Klms on it.
Ive had it for about 4 month and put on 8,000Klms.
Its 2.5 TD Manual with the normall opitions.
I tow with the car and find it goes very very well, I have not had 1 problem yet.
I would recomend that you buy one over an aussie car with 200,000 Klms for the samey money.
You cant get value for money like imports in australia.
In my mind its very good value for the money and the car will have many options such as power steer, air con, power window etc.
Just my 2 cent worth.

Hey there, i too own an import Paj, a very clean and well looked after J top (refer to my sig) which i've had no probs with, have insured it quite easily/cheaply ($995pa full comp, 23yo), and is not possed my demons.
I'll admit that mine is one of the 'good' ones, but dont believe all that hype about jap imports being dodgy, there's plenty of 'good' ones! I've also owned a highly modified r31 turbo skyline import, and agian, was no trouble (except for insurance ).
I'd highly recommend u search out a good import over an equivilant aussie spec.... Happy hunting

Ive started to look at the soft top pajeros as well, which I think means an import. Im after an auto though as I want to do some longer road trips so Im keen on cruise control.
There seems to be 2 different types though - the J Tops which seem to have very straight bodies, and then the more traditional pajeros with flared wheel arches etc. I prefer these ones.
Are they a capable 4 wheel drive ? Im not after anything extreme, but do want to be able to get out there and keep up.

Yes, they're capable. They regularly go places that a Hilux or early 'Cruiser will struggle with. In stock form they're pretty good. To me, they're the best of the IFS 4wds, and not far behind 'Cruisers and Patrols - in most terrain. If a Paj can't keep up then many others won't either.

MMM, thats a nice j top, but mine has the flared guards too (see pic), i think it's mostly the older j tops, i.e 1990-1993/4 without the flared.

Whats the turning circle like ?
I was originally looking at the Vitaras because I like the idea of a short compact car as I live in the middle of the city, but also want a semi capable 4x4 for when I do want to go bush. The soft top pajero looks to be a bit bigger which I like, without being a monster to park.
90% of the time will be city driving so I would prefer something zippy as well.
I dont really understand the different between turbo diesels and petrol. Was thinking petrol because I think it has more get up and go. Any opinions / advice for a 4x4 newbie on what to buy / look at ?

The SWB Pajero's have an excellent turning circle, esp for a 4WD.
J Top's have no security and the Soft Tops go hard and break up/tear stitching very soon after arriving. Whether this is age or UV's it is an added expense. I would not buy a soft top unless you particullarly want one, a Hard Top will do all you want.

Funnily enough, i just got asked about the turning circle yesterday by a mate who hadn't seen my Paj. I think it's excellent, pretty nimble around town, piss easy to park, and VERY zippy (if ur into that).
I've got the petrol 3.5, but im not bias to it, the 2.8 td's go quite well in the swb's, so either one will provide adequete go around the city.
In the aussie hard tops of that model, u can only get the 3 litre, which again, go's good, and is a good option.

Sounds like Im pretty much after what you have Tonka Paj. Id still like an Auto though.
