thats strange coz.... i have 285/75 16's on standard gxl rims, a similar size tyre as a spare does fit underneath, but it hangs down lower.
A friend has done this on his 80, although i still have the standard spare (275/70) which would be much bigger than a 31, which fits fine.
The only spot it seems close to is the tow bar, but the chain setup does allow for a little sideways movement, i.e. bigger tyre.
