Custom pod filter air box?

Has anyone tried fabricating an air box to replace most of the OEM plumbing that would enclose a pod filter? I figure someone skilled with sheet metal could do it out of aluminum and seal it to gulp air from the front grill area.

I've made one out of perspex and downpipe pieces! Cost about $30 to make not including the filter. I put a K&N filter in it and ran it between the snorkel and the plennum. Only problem was that the glue wasn't strong enough and it broke. I'll fix it with silicon... that way it'll have a bit of flex.

IMHO you might as well just buy a drop in K&N replacement for the factory canister?! It's well designed for trapping dirt, is water proof and has the inlet mounted high.

Or, use the canister and play around with better piping?

when ever i get around to bolting the turbo on mine, i am going to make a fibreglass air box that mounts in behind the headlight. i'll most probably use the pod filter i have now, and it will be fed from a fibreglass snorkel.

if the factory canister doobie wasnt so damn large i would work out a to use it in the front corner of the eng bay, mine came with a K&N filter in it.

Made an aluminium one for K&N pod.

Is still in prototype stage, but seems to work well.

Not a bad idea David! I was thinking that the convoluted path air must travel with the factory system must lack some efficency, but I'm probably wrong. I've put a K&N pod on the tube that feeds the plenum, but of course it is exposed to the dirt and heat that swirls in the engine bay. At least it makes it much quicker to access that side of the engine.
For everyone else that has made an airbox; did you notice any improvement? Are there any photos?

I think it did make a difference having the pod, the box just minimises dirt and crap building up on the filter. I don't have any pics of it at the moment but I will look into getting some so I can post a few images.

I have it facing the washer bottle just above the guard. I have had water come over the bonnet with out a blind. I got water into the car, and guess wot...?? no water into the engine. If you stopped u would be stuffed, but I have sealed it and it is good for pretty bad water crossings.
