Disco 95

Disco 95
have just bought a disco 95 3.9 manual V8i (I think not rossignol) from the auctions.
5 door, ac, ps, elc mirrors/windows(4), cruise.
Done 160K looks straight, nothing underneath suggests HD Offroad
However when I put it over the pit they came back with:
Steering Box Leaking
Power Steering pump leaking
Both Engine mounts cracked
Is this normal what do you guys think??

The leaks are normal as they were intricitly designed by Land Rover to ensure that the owner may know that the parts are still lubed

Land Rover Discovery - GQ conversion underway
The power steering leaks are the biggies. How bad are they? If just a weep and no drips on the panhard rod form the box, then this is Just a Land rover marking its territory.
Its $700 for a reco box and $600 for a new pump,.so I suggest you consider whether you can live with them.
Check whether the brake master cylinder is leaking between the reservoir and the cylinder. If so its a couple of rubber washers you can get from LRA only. Its pretty difficult to tell.
How much do you need a heater ??? How are you at DIY. Its a relatively non specialist job but it takes 8 hours at least so you are paying BIG for a mechanic, but the parts cost is only a couple of hundred.
Looks like you bought a car that the owner was sick of and didn't spend anything on, so I would also change all the oils and grease the UJs .

With your power steering issue, there's a good stop leak additive (funnily called 'Lucas Power steering stop leak' ) an American product and it does work, garunteed to slow or stop the leak entirely.
I had an 84 Rangie years back that had a severe power steering leak and usede it and was amazed that it didn't leak ever again. I had the Rangie for about 2 years and topped it up once with this gear, money well spent
If it's only a drip here and there I agree with Phil, live with it. Regards to the stop leak, available from Supercheap or Autobarn for around the $17 mark these days.
Cheaper than a $700 recoed 'box and $600 recoed pump
Regards,
Trav

First up, G'day Aquarangie, the rear springs are doing well Matched em with a set of Bilstiens.
Your Disco Isn't a Rosignol as I'm pretty sure they only came out in a three door. The power steering stop leaks sounds good, might have to give that a try myself. I actually think $2000 to fix all those things is pretty reasonable, if that's with parts as well as labour. If labour only then do as much as you can yourself.

Yes it's good stuff and saves you in the short term til you can afford to fork out the money to have it done.

Re: disco 95
You got it for a pretty good price then. The earlier ones are now that price (91-93 3 door and 5 door) so $2K when you think to fix all those things isn't too bad, but i still suggest you do as many yourself as possible to save a few $$$roverrat wrote:PS I only paid 5K for it

Well **** me...
All those jobs listed above were a piece of piss (mostly labour) not a lot in the parts ... HOWEVER
Stone the crows if I am EVER .. EVER... gonna put a heater unit in a disco again (or any other car for that matter) That was the most testing DIY fix I have ever done on a car.
Oh yeah and the access to get the steering box out is interesting (read very frustrating) to say the least (English people must have really really small hands
