Time to buy a set of AT tyres for my Vitara.
What are your favourite AT tyres for performance, durability and reasonable on road performance?
Cooper, BFG, Kumho, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Toyo, etc ?

What brand AT tyres?

The BFG's are fantastic. Great mileage, reasonably aggressive and great puncture resistance. Never got a hole or leak whilst traversing the Simpson and Cameron corner.
Best A/T's are muddies.... when there's mud A/T becomes no terrain (eg bogged).
Had some new Kuhmos with good results and some old BFG's with crap results. New Toyos were also pretty damn good too. Not blaming the BFG's cos they were old and secondhand, but they're the only brands I've had much experience, since I've mainly used muddies.
Oh yeah also had some Bridgestone Desert Duellers and beach is about all I could recommend them for.
The Toyo's are pretty good though - a friend found them so much better on road in his Rodeo he bought a set for his GU and is wrapped as well.

Well from experience i'd say the bfg at's were pretty good. Mine lasted 70 thou k's and were still very legal. But wen they get worn down they start to become a harder compond and get very slippery on the wet roads. off road they still worked quite well in the mud with the tyre pressures let right down. The ones under my zuk were the 215/75 r15's, And only 1 puncture in there life, a coach bolt on the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MT/Rs are a great tyre. i got a brand new set of MT/Rs in a 235/7515 for my nissan xtrail. (before i got my vit)
i had them on there near on 2 years, and they were about 50% still. i didnt do any hard core 4wding in the xtrail, its not a real 4wd, only camping trips and so on, but they worked really good, even on a pretend 4by.
then came the suzi, put the MT/Rs on the suzi, and ran them flat out. off road punishment, on road burnouts, sideways round-a-bouts etc etc. had them on for a year, and now they are back on the xtrail again. and still going. i did about 40-50K in the extrail on them, and maybe another 15k or so in the vit.
i too agree, as they wear, the compound gets harder. so MT/Rs should be a sure thing.
although i've been watching a set of 31" cooper ST on my mates hilux, had them for about a year, no hardcore stuff, just mainly touring, camping, hunting etc etc. done about 25K on them, and still look pretty deep for their use. wonder if the new STTs are as good.

Started with the old Falkens... runnin round nw qld - isa mines... but they stuffed em in the sidewall when they remodelled in 98/99.. been runnin bfg since.. mud clogs em.. but they handle most stuff pretty well and ride well on the road...
