What's that noise

Post by Maxxis »

I have a petrol GQ and when sitting on very steep hills the motor makes a dull nocking noise. It doesn't seem to do any harm, and there is plenty of oil pressure. Does anyone know what this noise is?

Sounds like a passenger side engine mount has torn. The engine remains captive through the design of the mount, but the knocking you can hear is the captive tongue in the holder moving with torque - on hills as you noticed.

That's not it. I have replaced both mounts. It is an engine noise.

When you had the mounts out, did you notice any rubbing on the tongues of the captive holders? On steep hills the motor and gearbox assembly will move back and forward, considering that the only things holding them to the vehicle are the rubber mounts, they may be rubbing in the captive holders. Motor and gearbox assembly are a hefty item.

What model GQ (year), do you have the 4 bolt or 2 bolt engine mount?
