22R making tinking sounds

Post by big bundy »

My 22R is making this tinkinking sound when u rev it up and also more when it revs down, its not the exhaust manifold gasket becuase i have chaged that twice in the last two weeks

the noise is coming from the front part of the engine, around 1st or 2 nd cylinder. and up near the plugs/head i thought it could of been tappets but it doesnt really sound like that.

what do you guys think it could be???

any sussgestions would be greatly appreichiated (don't flame me i can't speel )

could be a timing chain. very piss poor on a 22r . the weakest link on a old faithfull motor. they are only good for around 100 thou before reccomended replacement. When mine finnally broke out the guides it sounded like it had snapped a rod or similiar.

mmmm i've heard timing chains that are stuffed before, but it doesn't exactly dound like that either, but i guess different engine sound differnt, but the noise is also coming furthur back from where the timing chain is..... :?

Its all a process of elimation my Jedi apprentice (couldn't resist  ) .
Just rember they are a pita to work with. maybe buy a compression tester and see if there is something amiss.

even when "correctly" adjusted, a 22R top end tends to be noisy. you can wind the valve clearances down to about 1/2 even down to 1/3 of the book figures to make it a fair bit quieter - the tradeoff is that it will need adjustment more often as the slightest valve seat recession will see you lose compression.

the other problem tends to be the timing chain as already mentioned, and it doesn't sounds like a timing chain - the bad news is, if you let it go too long, it will actually saw through the side olf the timing case. the good news is, while you're in there changing it you can replace the gay 22R single row chain and sprockets with a double row set off a 21R.

think very carefully about how much you spend on your 22R, and weigh it against the cost of a moderate engine conversion (eg commodore V6), or getting a fully reco'd 22R to swap in - more $ up front but could save you money in the long run.

cheers

thanks mate, my mates boss (mechanic) pulled off my timing chain cover and everything was sweet there about 3 weeks ago.

Victoria has just has new laws passed that will not allow P platers to drive rotaries, turbos or V8's. i plan to buy a house an about 2 years time and pull the 22R out and drop a 1g-gte in (2L straight 6cyl twin turbo) that will get the beast moving, your right mate i do want to spend at least as possible on the old donk, as it will be getting ripped ouit in about 3 years now when i am 21 and get of my P's!

i had the car up at skool about 2 weeks ago using the hoist to do my diff breathers, and showed my auto teachers, he didn't have a good look but he did have a quick one, hes not sure what the noise is but he recons it doesn't sound too bad.

i'll take it down to my mates boss next week and get him to go over her!!!

cheers greg
