does anyone know where I could buy or borrow a radiator carbon dioxide tester (head gasket sniffer/turkey baster looking thing)? in Western Sydney thanks

what does it do?

if you want to measure the concentration of co2 in a liquid... i do a similar thing for fish tanks. measure the ph and kh and i can give you the formula to work out the amount of co2.

it detects CO2 in the gas/vapor at the top of the radiator - looks like a turkey baster/hydrometer. it works by bubbling the gas through a liquid which changes colour in the presence of C02 gas - so not trying to measure the gas dissolved in the coolant, but the free CO2 gas in the cooling system.

Hi Dumbdunce
I used to use these but have found them unreliable over recent years.
They don't seem to change colour any more, possibly with the change in fuels. They also never seemed to work on Diesels.

hey Jtop, agree they do't work so well on diesels - at idle, there is hardly any c02 in diesel exhaust, but lots of free oxygen. a compression test is far more conclusive for head gasket problems as they usually go between 2 cylinders.
