I heard somewhere (but haven't been able to find any info since) that the braking performance of the lux could be improved by changing the master cyclinder.
I have a 1984 LN65 Hilux (Smaller drums etc). I have seen all the info on changing over to a 80 series or Surf V6 Master Cylinder with the 1" bore, but that was always in regards to a rear disc conversion and the need for more fluid to be moved.
Will changing this over (just the master cylinder) be of any advantage to me? Ie. Stronger pedal feel? Etc......
With the recent engine conversion something to help the strength of the brakes would be great.
If so........ What models am I looking for and is a direct bolt on swap?

Hilux Brake Master Cylinder Question
Moderators: toaddog, Elmo, DUDELUX
No, it will be worse as your caliper volume is matched to the current MC.
You would need to swap to the V6 4Runner wider discs and also their calipers to effectively use the 1" MC.
Failing a complete brake upgrade you could try a double diaphram booster from a later model as that has nothing to do with fluid volumes etc.

Tonka I researched all this with the Paj SAS.
Ended up using the larger 4 Runner V6 calipers (twin 45mm pistons) with late model Lux vented 302mm rotors (used DBA slotted rotors with Bendix 4x4 pads).
My master cylinder is still standard Paj = 23.88mm bore and it pulls up fine.
Later Lux's run a 23.88mm bore master with the calipers twin 35mm pistons. So you would be looking at the late model vented rotors with the V6 4 Runner calipers and the 25.4mm master cylinder to supply the extra volume required. The backing plate may have to be trimmed a bit as well.
I think early Lux's like yours ran even smaller pistons in the calipers (like 1x35mm & 1x25mm).
But someone did say that the later stuff won't bolt onto the early Lux swivel hubs so I'd check that first. If it does all fit your model it is an excellent brake upgrade.
With the rear drums you can upgrade to the later (88 on) 295mm units as opposed to the earlier 254mm (pre 88).

I just luv my "clacker Jabber"
hey tonka ... which engine are you runnin now AND was the prob there before the engine swap????
a mate of mine swapped a holden motor into a series II landy and his brakes were useless after the swap .... HE found the problem to be Vacuum booster related ( the old 2.5litre landy motor SUCKED more than the holden 6 ) seriously
he is a mechanic and quickly dismantled his brake power booster and cut down the size of the spring inside less vacuum = smaller spring
i wouldnt exactly recomend BODGING your power booster BUT possibly swapping it to a different model booster ????

The rotors won`t fit, just get vented slotterd rotors for the front and play with the LSPV till it feels right or just disk the rearozrunner wrote:
