DieselBoy wrote:Well, i passed up on that LSD center i was talking about earlier, it was from a 96 R50 Terrano, which is late modle.
The spline count was wrong.
So I'm looking out for a WD22 LSD unit to see if thats what we need.
Note we need a 31 spline , 9bolt crown, and the R50 Terrano carrier was a 33 spline, 9bolt crown.
It got me wondering if it was a cheap replacement for the rear instead.........
Any how, i had the chance to drive a Hilux with a Detoit in the rear and an LSD up front.
Climbed nicly, but an absolute mongrel in the soft slippery stuff.
Thing is, unlike a front locker, you can't simply jump out and dissengage a free wheel hub if your having trouble steering..........
Ever tired driving with one hub unlocked on an auto locker? It's a technique used with welded diffs yes, it is even worse to steer, but I dare say this could also be a good way to destroy an autolocker. Also you would have unlock the correct side depending on which direction you wanted to turn.
Half the trouble you are feeling could be the auto locker pushing from behind.
I have a LSD in the front of a Patrol and have no problems, steerings only slightly heavier than normal, never even considered unlocking a hub.
Maybe the Hilux had manual steer, I had a front lockright with manual steer and it was an absolutely dangerous pig to drive.

Fair enough.
I,m having allsorts or drama's getting the Detroit for the rear.
I want the full Detroitr locker, not just the carrier kit for the y60 33spline.
The guy i am dealing with at the Diff Shop came back to me the other day and said his sources in the states found the y50 and the Y66, and a y66 33 spline. Apparently they never made a y60 33spline???
What the??
You guys in OZ would surely know, some one must be runnng a Full Detroit Locker in the rear of your GQ's.
Any chance of a Part No.??

AFAIK the only thing with the same rear diff as a GQ is a GQ or GU, and I've never heard of anybody having a detroit rear or lockright, go either the air locker or factory LSD, it's a bullet proof rear end, don't be scared to leave it locked for the whole length of a hill.
A mate has a detroit in the front and plenty have front air lockers or lockrights.
I believe TJM are releasing a range of vacumn lockers in the next 12 months.

Ok, and a GU is a Y?? Chassis??
33 spline p bolt crown etc etc carrier??
The guy I'm dealing with is heading over to the states in three weeks and he is going to have a llook in person at whats available for the various Safari's/Patrols and see if he can find one that will fit.
Failing that its the ARB, and he will purchase that for me and ship it back in his container so hope fully i will get it for a good price.
I would go eitherway with the lockers, the Detroit in my mind has the reliability of simplicity over the ARB and ARB has the advantage of unaltered road manners over the Detroit, so price and availability will dictate.
I would prefer the Detroit though, as you don't have to shell out the extra $250 odd of the compressor and plumbing etc.
We shall see then in a couple of weeks i guess!!!!

You don't need the flash compressor, a $15 K-mart compressor will run an air locker, I'd buy the $40 wiring loom though. The big compressor is only so you can pump up tyres, a 2 litre gas bottle pumped to 90psi will activate the locker around 10 times, they only use air when released.

Don't give away all my cheap ideas............I bought the $99 from repco on special and have now had it for 3 years no problems with a custom ait tank. Now I have the claws I would not have put a front locker in and stayed with the limo! Air lockers are no where near as good as they used to be..........
Yeah thats what was going to do if it came to te crunch
I have a 35 L/min compressor, so i figured that would do the trick.
And a modified gas cylinder. Yup, could do that to.
Do you actually need to run a cylinder??
ie, does the air pressure actuate the locker, or hold it off??
If it actuates it, then no cyclinder would = very slow oppoeration.
Still, lets see what Ben from the Diff Shop comes up with in the states.
I am seriously tempted to go with the air locker if its the right price, even if there is a detroit available.

You cheap ideas? I had that set up in my Rangie ages ago before I converted the A/C compressor

You need a cylinder because the air is needed to activate the locker, but you only need to charge it up when you plan on using it. Red Rover had a larger air tank and no compressor for a while to activate his, he just pumped it up back at camp off someone elses compressor.

Sounds true based on what i have uncovered this far.
They claim to have a Y66 33 spline, but weather that will work remains to be seen.
May be an airlocker after all.............................

Also remember a detroit rear is going to give some interesting road manners, not something you want just anybody to jump into & drive in wet weather.

Remeber they don't make Patrols/Safari's in the States, which would be the biggest market, so they probably don't make accessories for them.
From memory it is the WD21 that has the same centre.
J Top
WD21 rear carrier is the same as the GQ front??
Is that what your saying??
Very true about on the states bit.
That would be why there is a lockeravaiable for the ront of the GQ as its the same carrier as in the rear of the WD21 Pathfinder, which are reasonably common over there.
