Vitara inner guards - removeable?

Post by kimclive »

During it's previous life the battery on my Vitara has exploded and the acid has gone all over the inner guard, right down to the chassis. Rather than throwing a bucket of water over it, the owner has just left it. The result is shown below :?

Is it possible to remove the inner guard and replace it without major surgery?

Any advice gratefull received.

Cheers

only the front outer guards are removable. the inner guard, where the battery was, is welded to the firewall.

so to fix it, it would be a huge cut and pastes (weld) job, and thats after you've taken just about everything out of the engine bay. seems like it surface rust, and not too bad, cant you get a rust converter on it, so stop it rusting more, and then spray it with some tar, or killrust paint or something?

you could always cut the inner guards out of both sides and tube frame it under the original outer guards.

A bit more than surface rust I'm afraid.

2 holes about 10c piece size and one about $100 note size. I'll have a talk to a panel beater on Monday.

Cheers

is that about the same size a $5 note? i havent actually seen a $100 in real life before.

:)

you should be able to cut it out and weld some sheet/plate over the hole. depends on how easy it is to get to. i think thats what panel beaters do anyway.

I've never seen one either! I originally typed $10 note then added an extra zero to make it sound more expensive to fix! ;)

Thanks for the advice. I'll see what my friendly local panel beater says. I'll ask for a price if I've done all the stripping and cutting and he just has to do the welding.

Cheers
