Water proofing canvas

Whats the best way to water proof canvas (I have a canvas soft top and it leaks a little) i have been told you can get silicon spray and just spray the whole roof. Is there a better way than silicon? and if not is there a specific type of silicon spray i should use of is it the same stuff you spray on rubber bushes etc?

Try the spray tin of scotchguard (if they still make it)

Go see someone who makes/repairs caravan annexes and other canvas products, they should have something there for you to use.

our canvas tent had instructions to set up and keep wetting and drying the fabric numerous times until the stitching "takes up" and material becomes resistant to wetting thru. It still leaked in a rain storm but never has after that.

There is some substitute for it now. There were claims that scotchguard on lounge suites was being soaked up by the skin causing skin cancer. At least this is what I heard when it came to buying a new lounge.

yeah, myb even try soaking it, when ya get a new swag best is to put it in a bath for a day than dry it out.....if all else fails get some of the stuff they put on driz a bones

Does it leak through the material, or along the seams?

Head for your nearest camping store, & grab some re-proofing stuff for tents.

If its through the seams, am aerosol will probably do. If its through the material proper, get the white milky stuff and brush it on.

Not cheap though, & you'll probably have to buy enough to do a tent surprise surprise.

Thanks for all the replys ive soaked it and given it a real good clean (had mud stains on it). It leaks through the material. I was also thinking the stuff they use on driz a bone anyone know what that is? Ill head down the camping store tomoro and have a look at what they have aswell. I want somthing that will make it easy to clean aswell.

the stuff the use on drizabone is an oil. It can be bought at Rays Tent city (and other camping stores i imagine to) not sure how much as i haven't had to re-oil mine yet

Its done i grabed some suff from the custom car place next door to work will have to wait and see how it works.

Just in case water does start finding its way through the seams as time goes by get some bees' wax. It comes in a tube (like toothpaste) or something that looks like a lipstick thing. Rub it in the seams and no water will get through.

If its real cotton canvas get hold of some "Bradmill Duradux".

You either paint it on with a brush or roll it on if the canvas is a light colour it may discolour it slightly (greenish tinge).

Guarantee it wont let any water through though.

The stuff he gave he didnt dry clear . It said on the can that it drys clear i think it musnt have set right because it may have been to cold when i painted it, Took me 3 hours to get the stuff off. I ended up spaying it with 808 silicon spray seems to work good dosnt let water through and should be easy to clean just dont know how long it will last (and nothing will stick to it ).

I found out what i did wrong the water proofing was for cotton canvas and the canvas i had was marine canvas. He also said marine canvas should be water resistant and if its not is probably stuffed.
