Rough running cold GQ questions

Hi, Ive had my GQ TB42 for a few years and for a while now when it's started cold it runs really badly- rough, missing. It has a new distributor, plugs and leads, and seems to be ok in the electrical department. It runs fine after about 3 minutes.

I am thinking it has a fuel shortage problem while the choke is operating and is running to lean, is there anything that can go wrong with the carby that can cause this.

Also it seems to do it more since I put a snorkle on and disconnected the little warming thing that runs off the exhaust manifold and siliconed it shut. I put a screw in the hose to stop it sucking stuff up.

Running electronic ignition and straight petrol

Any ideas -seems fuel related but any ideas would be great.

Last winter when it was doing it, it fauled up the plugs also and once the plugs were cleaned, it run fine.

Check the choke is not over adjusted.

Hi mate. Although Im no expert, I think that cold starting is somewhat of an inherant problem with the petrols. Ive had mine for about a year and a half now but noticed early on that it was a vehicle that really needed its warm up time. This became much much worse as the mercury fell. Initially I though it just might have been a sign of age.....mine is an 89 model with almost 250km on it. That was untill my mate bought a 91 model with half that amount of k's on it, and the problem was exacely the same. Last winter it got to the point with mine that I thought raw fule was going to start pouring out of the exhaust pipe it was running so rich on start up. Like yours it would clear up and run smooth after several minutes.

I took it to my mechanic, who after a bit of fiddling adjusted the choke to allow for a much smoother start when cold. It still requires a bit of warm up before driving or else it runs rough, but it is much better. The down side is I now have a fast idle that doesnt work properly so I have to use the hand throttle to set the revs while it warms up. Ideal? Perhaps not exactly, but to me its much better than the plumes of black smoke I used to get.

Sorry I cant be more specific as to what changes my mechanic made to the choke.
