Removing Inner Axle from CV?

Post by John H »

On a GQ front axle, can you remove the inner shaft from the CV joint in the same way that the Yota boys do? IE: remove cir-clip and bash the two apart?
I just want to be able to carry one spare CV on the trail and use it on the left or right depending on which one I stuff.

If they do come apart like a Toyota CV, then where do you buy the replacement cir-clips for putting it back together — any idea of part numbers?
Nissan say that the CV doesn't come apart but I don't think they know what they are talking about (could be wrong but that's my guess  ).

yeh u can seperate the bell part of the CV joint itself from the axle. just undo the clip and bash away.

as said above the circlip usually comes with the replacement.

the trick there is to not loose em.... ive had one to many fling off out of site and be farked where it went :?

I'm getting my spare CV from a wreckers and it will be complete with the inner axle — thats how they sell them to.
I will need to have some cir-clips handy on the trail so I can swap inner axles if required. Just need to know where to buy them separately.

I'm under the impression that there are a couple of cir-clips that help to keep the CV/bell on the inner axle. One that you can get to and remove and the other that you can't.
I thought that you needed to replace one of the cir-clips after you removed the inner axle as it gets trashed when you bash the axle off.
Am I getting this right or not?
Cheers

I would not bother as when you bust a CV you will definatly ground down the axle to a non reusable point. I would just carry a left and right side CV and axle complete. You will most likly bust the CV trying to get it of the axle anyway.

Fair call. I was just trying to save money by not having to buy two CV's. Whenever I have popped CV's the bell has cracked but the axle has been OK — must be the way I drive :)

I have personally not been able to reuse any axles but I dont stop driving until the finishing gate though.

You can buy brand new CV's for $120 or so and then just knock them on the axle after breaking a CV.

That doesn't save them, might as well replace the chassis & car while you're at it.
Doesn't it drive funny with a wider track on the front than back?

So how do you save GU axles? :finger: :D

The axles aren't easily removeable, basically you need to destroy the CV to get it off, you can often reuse the axle after the CV has grenaded. But we damaged an axle because we had to cut the old CV up with oxy to release it, because the CV was worn badly but not broken, it let go in the clip and chewed the splines off the axle 12months later, remarkably the CV is still good though. You can't completely disassemble the CV, the best you can do is get the ball bearings out.
Apparently you can buy the CV's with axles complete brand new.
I got the CV seperate from Hardy Spicer at Eagle Farm Brisbane.

this is the best way. carry a left and a right and make sure you slide a spare new axle seal on each when you wrap them up as a lot of the time the seal will flog out aswell.
