Engine of choice for these two?

Engine of choice for these two?
What is the preferred engine type for these two...
Torque Figures and so on, just what would you prefer...
1UZ is a V8, but does the torque match the V6?
Would like to use a Manual Gearbox with Part Time Transfer, What options do I have for both, my current 5 Speed and Transfer are dying...
Auto is another Option, but not preffered, but what's available that way?
Driving Style: Climbing Rocks, Hills and other obstacles, Hill Climbs, Racing Ricers, and even entering Burnout Comps (but not with my 35s)...

It depends what you want in the way of fitting. The V6 is fairly easy and gives a good amount of power. The 1UZ is alot more work to fit aswell as more costly. But if you are a V8 person and truely want a V8 you will never be happy with the V6 even if it is just the lack of that majic V8 rumble. This is why I went the V8 and not the V6 I have as I know that deep down I would not be happy with a V6.
Probably, don't know haven't looked into it, but your right, I doubt it would be all alloy, otherwise i'd use an 'ALLOYTEC' engine...De-lux wrote:isn't the commo v6 a cast block with an alloy head
I think the V8 would be cool, I want power, but want to keep it light...
Not very torquey is the 1UZ, but I could still fry tyres... With a manual box you can always work around lack of torque...

Let me know...Guts wrote:It has torque but its just high in the rev range, I`m hoping my crawler gears will help here. I`ll know soon
Unfortunately, I am running 35s on standard Ratios, so I might feel it lack a bit... I have a MWB Cruiser, without the roof, and Alloy Bar Work so there isn't too much weight to push around...
Lucky for me, I do like revs...
Aftermarket EMS and exhaust work should help a bit too...

Well it seems that most people are opting for the 1UZ, just need to work out the finer details of adapting a manual gearbox with part time transfer.
Cheaper if I used mine, but it's playing up and needs a rebuild, so in goes newer technology...

Finding a gearbox isn't too hard, it then seems to be getting a bellhousing off one model, then the flywheel, clutch etc from another then bolting it all together... $800 for bell housing alone, then clutch kit, then actually purchasing another gearbox...
Cheaper to rebuild mine and get an adaptor I think, then I have the press button four wheel drive, I like that...

Yeah, i;m looking into using my box, having it pulled down and rebuilt soon. Will get onto Dellow too, he rang me a while back as they never made any for this box, but he was starting one soon, thats why he called.
The V6 is making a comeback but I think the V8 is the way to go...

the V6 commodore engine is all cast iron including the head.De-lux wrote:isn't the commo v6 a cast block with an alloy head
it was originaly designed by Buick in the 1950s but was droped for a few years becuase of the lack of power and its harsh running...
it was then adopted by GM (and holden) when the need to replace the 90degree odd fire and semi odd fire V6 engines.
peronly i like my CHEV semi odd fire better. smaller cubes at 3.4L but has plenty of go and will smoke 35s
a 4.3L V6 chev would go great guns
What are these chevs worth, I like the price on the Quad Cam and also that they are a high clearance engine...

not sure what they are worth. the conversion was already done when i got the lux.Meldge wrote:What are these chevs worth, I like the price on the Quad Cam and also that they are a high clearance engine...
only problem is they are all carby fed engines. i'm in the process of an EFI conversion for mine right now. and it's looking very much like i'll get change out of $1000. beets LPG any day
the other plus is iv you get sick of the power and want a V8, every thing is already set up to take a small block chev V8
You can't beat that V8 rumble .
I run a 308 in mine now and its grouse.
Another Surf owner near me has slotted the 1UZ in his and it goes very well but it does need to be reved a bit harder than mine to get it to get up and go BUT thats not a bad thing
The V6 is a good swap too and has a good torque curve although a little high in rev range but geared properly it won't be a problem.

My mate runs Holden 308 injected in his 73 middy, cruiser 5 speed, cruiser transfer with reduction gears, and 4.1 centres, used all marks adaptors gear for conversion, and can light up 39 swampers on tar better than any dunnydore V6 anyday
(It also goes really good in the bush as well)
And after the Chev diesel that was in it, the V8 looks really small.

Try not to let your mind wander...It is too
small and fragile to be out by itself.

meldge how big is your budget and what do you plan on doing yourself
the holden way would be easyer the tojo way due to computer mod would be more high teck . personaly i would stick to tojo i know you dont like the oil burner you can get petrol 6 out off 80 or 100 series and turbo that you would get tranny and transfer aswell it would HAMMER and would be cool for the wow factor not too meny off those in middys but it comes down too $

LETS GO BRONCOS
I did think of the Turbo 4500 engine for a while, would use some fuel, and I didn't come across any packages of Engine, Box and transfer either.
The 1UZ would be good on fuel but not as torquey, it does have power but high in the revs...
Does anyone have Dyno figures of a Turbo 4.5 6 Cylinder and or the 1UZ.
Does the Turbo option spool early and have torque on tap?
If anyone has one, what is it like on fuel, who can I talk to?
1UZ Wiring is not hard at all, Lextreme.com people are talking about them, but people (silly people) are running autos mainly...

And the wiring is not hard for the 1UZ, specially as you said, with help from the lextreme guys...its just time consuming, depends on the halfcut you get but too. A Crown Halfcut is the best if converting to manual as it has a seperate transmission ecu.

Thanks for that Twisty, are you able to smoke your 33s in first gear and let revs drop back down to 1000rpm, and then throttle up again...?
Does it do it easily if it does? The straight six of mine does and i like that torque...
