4wd city in sydney have a 6x6 perenti for sale 56,000kms for $27k looks pretty clean with the normal extras - 4bd1t and 6wd etc. it was also fitted with 4.7 diffs.
I have never had a real good look at one up close and always figured they were a 110 with an extended chassis and a 2nd diff running through the pto. how wrong i was! They have a totaly different chassis than a normal 110, made out of 75mm square box section and fully galvanised. the rear 2 diffs are leaf sprung with a center pivit between the shackles, the rear diffs are also about 6 inches wider than stock with massive drum brakes. the brake booster and master are also massive compared to my county. Being a civvy 6x6 it only had the standard 110 front diff and cab (army ones are wider like the rear).

Anyways i took it for a test drive, expecting it to be like a rocket ship compared to my N/A 4bd1 and was not very impressed. i dont know if it was the 4.7 diffs, but it felt the same as mine. before yos start saying , yeah but its heavier because its a 6x6, remember its a ute on 31s and mines a wagon on 35s.

For those people who have driven both, does a turbo on a 4bd1 really make it go harder in the mid-high revs, or was this one faulty or somthing? or is the stock turbo crap in need of high flowing?

The stock 4bd1-t only produces around 8lbs of boost at max, so no they arn't rocket's. But they turn the standard engine into an incredible towing engine, an when put into a smaller veh lick the 110 that's when you notice the real difference between the motors.
Keep in mind that the standard 6x6 is nearly over weight even when it's bare, when loaded up it's well over the max axle weight (that's why the army arn't game to take any of theirs over the weight bridges).

Are you sure about this? Sure they are heavy, but a 130 ute has a 1.5 tonne payload capacity, and a 6x6 has 2 axles to share the same load. So even with all the extra weight, I am sure they would still have a big payload capacity.

The military perentie only has a (widened) 110 front axle. JRA had to make a special (stronger) version of the 4.7 ring and pinion as the series ring and pinions used initially were breaking too often.

Fitting a turbo to the 4BD1 makes a difference. I drove a mates rangie with 4bd1T, and even though it is about 1tonne heavier than my 110 it pulled a fair bit better.

Close too 9 years driving in the army, and I've never seen a sixbie break or spit, that said, they suck some fuel loaded up, almost twice as much as a fourbie. And leaf packs in the rear are the thickest I have ever seen.

how can it be overweight empty? wouldnt it weigh the same as a 130 tray top say 2 tonnes, with an overdrive, salisbry diff 2 spare tyres and a tailshaft in the back tray? 2.5-2.7 tonnes max id say.

Also does anyone know what the brake booster and master are off on a 6x6?

Also don't forget the weight of those big heavy leaf packs, and the much heavier duty chassis.

i took that into account with the no a frame trailing arms and 2 coils. However i dont think the chassis would be much more than a standard 130? it is heavy duty, but constructed totally differently. My old 110 tdi ute with steel tray bullbar and spare was 1.9t. How much do you think an empty 6x6 tray top would weigh?

i cant see how, unless they are refering to the armys base model with the wider track front steel body and rollcage? very strange.

No rollcage in a 6x6, single cab, dual cab models both tray back, the Interm Infantry Mobility Vehicle, which whieghed a C#$p load and "specials" for that look up LRPV. I'm not sure if the "civil" ones are the same but the leaf packs are huge as said, I'd say easily more than the coils and arms combined fo 2 packs.

the brake booster should be a PBR F250 twin diaphram job. Can't remember what the m/c was. I fitted an F250 booster to my old F100 ex-ambo, and my ex JRA engineer mate said that it was exactly the same booster as fitted to the 6x6.

There is no dobt those beast are heavy but are a tru pack horse. For a big vehicle they are very cabable off road with the correct tyres and once under full noise. The rear spring packs are load sharing but I have seen them if weighted or lazy sprung on one side chew tyres out on the rear in a big way.

Never beat a one ten off the line or down the road. Strong motor though.

Have only seen two diffs let go internally and that was through stupidity. Hve seen many front diffs bend on the military spec.

Drum brake rear can be upgraded to 6 wheel disc military have the kit through JRA I spose. Both drum or disc need fine adjustment. Drum will give a very poor pedal if the rear shoes arn't adjusted well plus bearings.
Disc will near hit the floor if the slightest out of spec on adjustment. The actual master is just on its limit for output.

9 swinging spanners on them.
If in dobt just smile, it won't change what is broken but it will make it feel a whole lot better.
