Just curious as to wether the BJ/FJ 40 had a rear seat
Im sure i have seen some with them but are they factory and what would be the requirements if fitting one

BJ/FJ40 series had rear seats, in both troopy style - side facing - and forward facing seats. I think most would have std holes to mount side facing, with maybe a few captive nuts to add, dunno if they would have holes for forward facing.
So yes, they came out from factory with both, fitting wouldn't be much drama for side facing, forward facing have seat belts off the pillars, so you would need proper mounting points up there for them. I can take some pics of my shorty (it's in for sale section) on what the seat config looks like.
Cheers

I got a rear seat made up and fitted c/w engineers but it has only lap belts but had fitted child restraits. They couldn't fit lap sash unless a internal roll cage was made up for belts. Note it was a hard top when seat was fitted.

Sorry i ment just lap belts
and mine is a hard top also but i want to put a small draw system in the back aswell and i was thinking of bolting the seat to the top of the draw system and leaving a small area at the front for somewhere to put ya feet
do you reckon this will be ok or will the engineer tell me to piss off
Draw system will have a steel frame

Lap seat belt in rear of a 40 is fine if you present it with no where to mount it (no roof) but say it was in a hard to wagon or you fitted a cage that allowed it you have to fit lap sash seat belts because it is possible to fit them. Dose that make sence?? That is the way my engineer explained it to me. Darren
If you can not get there in a 4wd its not worth looking at

Most things i build are extremely over engineered
was going to use 20mm x 20mm x 3mm box for the main frame on the box and then run 2 lengths of 20mm x 50mm x 5mm double bolted either side for the seat to bolt to
If you are serious about doing it properly find an engineer , find out what he wants do it then bring it back finished. I have had things fail engineering because they are to strong some times they want it to bend and not break. Some times it is just rounding the corner on a peice of steel that will be the difference in pass or fail as in an accident a sharp peice of steel will cut through the car. I had seat belts fail because bolts where to strong and the heads on them where to small.

seats in a 40
hey Barney..
I am an engineer and i have also made this mod to my 40, including the draws under like you are talking about for the recovery gear. I also have a Eng Cert for it... I too, have over engineered it.. they are my kids after all. I also added to my roll cage to give them added protection and it looks really good and neat. The pic in the avitar is pre mods. If you are interested i can post up some pics of what i have done and what the eng cert guy will be looking for. This mod is only for the kids due to the space (draws remember) but it has a mod plate increasing the seating capacity too.
The whole lot cost me under 80 bux in steel and the seat i got from a guy on here.. from a zook for a carton of grog.
The whole lot is removable too very quickly if im on one of my bush outings.
letme know

Hi bj42...
yes, sure is shadecloth... i was fed up with getting burnt last summer.. took me and a mate a whole day to do. I think it works pretty well.. it holds its shape well if you get the right stuff. i used ute elastic to keep the tension around the sides and sail track (6 bux for 6 meters) for the front on the screen.
Ill take some pics this weekend for you mate and post them up.

Thought this thread was dead and buried but mechman that is exactlly what i want to do
Mine has the fold up seat in the back but compliance plate says 3 seater still and there is no paperwork to say the seat is legal, it only has lap belts in the back which have plated mounts under the floor so it looks to me as if its been done properly
Where you have the space under the seat i wanna put 2 draws in there
Thinking i might just get it rego'd and see if anything gets said about it then or see if a cert number shows on rego papers
Will be a while yet got lots of work to do on it
