Car trailers
Dose anyone know were you can get information on building a car trailer on the net or plains ect.Wont to look at different styles and regulations.
Dave they're not that cheap to build, i had a mate that built one for his speedway car from scratch and i think it ended up owing him around $3000 on road. I wouldnt mind trying to source an unrego'd rusty old one from somewhere and re-vamping it. Its amazing that no matter how many friends ya have in the automotive trade, theres always the question of "who do i know with a damn car float"?????
Good luck anyways

The prob with this is that a lot of comps you need a 4wd to get to where the comp is. For example at XRCC round zero i could not get a F250 with a Big Block and my rig on a trailer all the way to the camping ground because the access road is gravel and realy steap. Even Pete A had to select 4wd in his powerstroke F truck to get up the same hill.
I had to unload my rig and drive both of them about 2klm to the Camp ground.
Here some trading post goodness

Dave, go to a marine place and see if you ca find out about the axles in the pic.. My boss used them to build this boat trailer, they are a hexagonal section ~100mm thick with an axle shaft running through a big lump of shrunk-fit rubber inside them. Each end of the shaft has an arm about 3-400mm sticking out forward or backward. with the hub/stub axle setup on the end of that. So you don't need to build any suspension at all, just build up the frame/body of the trailer asnd bolt the axles under it.
Imagine how low you could get the car to sit on a trailer built on these things...
If you can wait a few weeks till he gets back from his holidays I can find out everything about the axles...

axles are most likly Alko.
making your own trailer is not a major issue.
You will need to take it to motor reg to get a vin plate and have it measured.
Brakes:
gross 750kg no brakes req.
gross 2500 kg: elec brakes over ride ??? (cannot remember).
Gross over 2500-4500kg must have breakaway brake system.
Gross over 4500kg all components must be ADR approved big $$.
Michael.

Fair call but there is also 4wd Mitsu and Isuzu trucks getting around although prob somewhat more expensive. If you have to buy a tow rig and trailer it would prob come to about the same price or cheaper anyway.
Is definately worth keeping an eye out for anyway.

"Full beam AL-KO axles are available either unbraked or braked and cover a capacity range from below 500kg to 3500kg. Axles may be specified in 50kg increments to provide optimum suspension performance. AL-KO axles feature a unique independent suspension system, which provides excellent progressive damping characteristics, far out-performing comparative systems."
Well it might be worth looking at because I have looked at building/buying a car trailer but have decided against it for the time being. Why have I decided this?
To higher it costs me $50 perday for a realy good trailer that tows perfect
To buy or build one would cost around $2000 to $2500 buy the time its regoed and insured. Debat it all you like thats what I think.
Now MOST times when I high the trailer I only higher it for 2 days so thats only $100. Which means I`d have to higher it 20 to 25 times before the cost of building one is meet, then you have rego and insurance every year plus maintance. I only need the trailer at most 5 times a year so it would take me 4 to 5 years before it pays for itself, then there is the storage issue to think about as well, plus all your mates and not mates wanting to borrow it all the time and if one of them damages it you can bet your arse that it will be you spending the dollars on fixing it up again

do like me, when i build one, only a modified 4WD will fit on it, people with cars will be like it will tear my door off, and ill be like sweeeeet
hands and mums dont count!!!
You`ll still get people doing the can either you help me move house or can I use your trailer.
You still have the time it will take to pay for itself, but if you are going to use it as much as say ballsac then that isn`t a problem.
Then there is the storage of it, where have you got to park it? For me this isn`t a problem but it might be worth looking at yourself.

The cost to build a Trailer is quite substantial.
The absolute best prices I got on axles were:
65mm axle with electric brakes 2.5T Capacity per axle. $900.00 ea
AL-KO were heaps more, about $1300ea
Complete Suspension System for Dual axle was approx $500-$700
Battery & Break-away System Approx $300
70mm Ball & Coupling Approx $350
If you can, make sure you rego your trailer with a larger GVM.......
4.490 Ton preferred because if & when you go to sell it, You will be able to sell it into the plant & equipment market who pay big bucks for a good trailer, but they need this higher GVM.
Also The price difference between the larger & smaller capacity axle's & Suspension System is only about $200-$300 or so.
Steel is the cheap side of this build up. I Spose about $350-$600 depending on how carried away you get...

Trailers
I have found buying a crappy one and rebuilding it the best way to go. I paid $200 for my first dual axle, onlt kept the axles, springs, wheels and coupling, still weel worth it. For $900 I had it on teh road registered with new rubber.
Then I decided it was to big so I built a custom unit from a kombi rear end, Weight is about 250 kg empty and it carries 1000kg on top of that. Easy lift for a buggy / beetle.
Now you may thing WTF my 4x4 weights twice that easy, yes it does but 2 kombi rear ends will give you the lift capacity you need and ride quality like you have never seen. You can get dead kombi's for next to nothing as well. They also come with brakes. I reckon you would get out of a 2500kg car trailer for around $1000 on road if you were building it for a specific vehicle, ie no floor just ramps etc.
My trailer is alway out and I charge $25 a go for it, if it goes for a week then so be it. Over the past 4 years it has made me about $400 by the time I take out rego and maintenance etc etc.
Anyway maybe another option to consider.
