what to do, what to do???
hi guys,
okay so i showed my interest in buying a pajero a little while ago, and have since become very fond of the swb paj, nh/nj model, and have been looking at them for the past kind of 7 weeks, and to my prevail they have all been sold or are j top...i spoke to a local 4wd machanic today and asked about the paj, and he said theyre great when theyre running and are very good, as i have heard from all of you, though he also said a few other things that have been said on this board:
-gearbox can be shite
-pulleys coming loose
-shafts wear out, especially when lifting
-timing belt is a bitch to be done
-ifs
so yeh, im very very keen to geta swb paj, but he rekons go a yota, i said iv got 10g to play with and for that it seems i can get a decent swb paj, but not a very good toyota, so yeh now im confused, theres a few swb paj's around, i really want a gls nh/nj model, sub 200k, and pretty stock cos im keen to do a s/lift, b/lift and wheels and keep it like that for a bit myself, so should i stick with it and search for a paj? are these probs that big a deal or just the same as every other 4by? any tips to looks for a swb paj nh/nj? i dont want a j top and prefer 3L v6 gls, so wondering if u guys can help

Don't know what he's talking about with the gearbox. My 5sp is a little notchier than I'd like, and I believe some early NHs had synchro problems, but I don't think there's a huge weakness there. Early Gen 1 5 speeds had some problems - I think most mechanics think it affects every Pajero ever built.
Pulleys coming loose? There was a recall notice for a crankshaft pulley bolt, if that's what he's referring to? I bought mine s/h in 2001, and first service I took it to Mitsubishi. They replaced the bolt free of charge without contacting me.
Which shafts wear out? No problems so far...
No arguments about the timing belt - it's a big job. Budget for it every 100k km, and do the water pump while you're in there.
IFS? Yes, it has. And it's better than the IFS on the Hilux, if that's what he's comparing it with.
What are you planning to do with it? My lifted shorty on 33" MT/Rs followed a brand new 100 series on 33" BFG muds around LandCruiser Mountain Park. I went everywhere he went, he got stuck where I got stuck. (This was before crawlers and diff lock.) In extreme terrain a 'Yota may be better - if that's where you want to go. Outside extreme terrain, a well set up Paj will do it too. It'll handle better on bitumen getting to and from your wheeling spots, use less fuel in the process, and break fewer CVs!
Some people just can't see past the Toyota badge.
Cheers,
Scott

yeh thats what i thought hey, just the usual things, u could pick out things on any car in the world and call them faults, but hey he only drove yotas so maybe it was his thing, im still lookin for a swb paj, i got like 4 to look at real soon, so hopefully soon ill own one, just a quick question,
whats up with the 2.6L engines? i know theyre only 4cyl and smaller and stuff but if i just wanna throw on some springs and body lift and some 32/33" tyres, will it be ok? cos fuel efficiency would have to be better? or would there be anything wrong with a 3L v6 but just a gl also? cos im going to look at a 3L v6 gls heaps of extras but with 234K 10g, 2.6L gls 189K 7g, 3L v6 gl wheels thats about it 198K 9g, and another 3L v6 gls seems very good 189K 9.7g, .....so yeh anything else im lookin for one, finding it hard as theres not many of them and i still havent sold my car, but thanks guys, i still really want one and wanna keep it mitsubishi
cheers

alright sweet, thanks swbpaj, thanks for your help, yah as you have said urs was $17,500, and iv def seen a few that price, so i rekon if i can find a sub $10000 one and in good nick with less than 200K on it then itll be sweet, theres a few there, so i guess ill just keep lookin, if i could sell my own car then id have one by now, but ahh well guess thats the way it goes, definitely wrapped about the swb paj but, its gonna be my new toy for sure, and hopefully for many years to come
Re: swb
The 2.6 was developed as a light truck engine, designed to pull and difficult to kill. Capacity wise it doesn't give away much to the 3l V6, but the V6 has the advantage of fuel injection, and more firing strokes for low rev smoothness.klrevo wrote:whats up with the 2.6L engines? i know theyre only 4cyl and smaller and stuff but if i just wanna throw on some springs and body lift and some 32/33" tyres, will it be ok? cos fuel efficiency would have to be better?
If you're happy to perform a rebuild they respond well to all the normal tweaks, and produce significantly more power and torque, along with better fuel economy. A well modified 2.6 will outperform a stock 3l V6 in most respects - except maybe steep slopes, where the carby will probably give problems.
The V6 is more popular, which is why they're higher priced. But the 2.6 isn't a bad second place.

champion nj, thanks heaps, yeh i can understand a fair bit about the carbies and know all the differences because iv got one now, so thats all good, i guess ill keep lookin, and whatever tickles my fancy i guess ill end up with, for the time being its looking time and driving time to find the perfect swb paj
ok you sound like you are in a simalar situation to me, first alow for some things to be fixed about a grands worth, because it's a second hand car and thats part of the deal. second mine was $8300 with 180k on the clock and it's a 91 nh, i hope that helps with the pricing. third when you get one this is the best bunch of people in the world to know, there is a huge amount of knowledge here it's a good idear to tap into it the tech data base is usefull and so are the faq sections. good luck with the buying.
