tx case

You may have worn syncros. Get it rebuilt and all should be good. If not, have you done a body lift.? The torque when you back off may be causing the tx case lever to hit the floorpan, thus knocking it out of gear.....
Custom body work by trees and rocks...

check the rubber boot isnt pulling it back out of gear, and how hard is it to shift between low and high etc the detent balls and springs might be worn, if its really easy to shift that might be your problem

have you or the previous owner done a body lift?

the transfer case lever could be fouling part of the body, or even the gearbox gearstick. take the plastic surrounds off, then take the rubber boot off and look if it hits anything (namely the floor pan)
indubitably
